ABOUT THIS POSITION:
As a Certified Medical Assistant at DHAT, you are the engine that keeps the clinic running. You will partner directly with physicians, mid-level providers, schedulers, and fellow medical assistants to deliver an outstanding patient experience from check-in to checkout. You are the primary point of contact between patients and providers, and the glue that holds the care team together. We value experience, but we also welcome new graduates who are hungry to learn. On-site training is available for newly licensed CMAs.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
The Essential Job Functions are:
- Greet and prepare patients for their visit by escorting them to the exam room
- Interview patients to obtain a current, accurate medical history, medication lists, allergies, and other relevant information; update the electronic health record (EHR) and document vital signs. Accurate documentation is critical
- Assist with patient visits, including preparing exam rooms, accompanying providers during examinations, dispensing sample medications as authorized, and completing orders for new prescriptions, refills, and/or imaging orders
- Document clinical information (medications, allergies, procedure scheduling worksheets) accurately, in the proper location in the EMR, and in a timely manner
- Routinely assess and restock exam rooms on a weekly basis (and as needed) to maintain appropriate supply levels
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies, linen and approved educational materials needed for patient care
- Schedule endoscopic procedures, diagnostic tests, and office visits per established protocols, including use of the EHR
- Document and/or scan patient demographic, insurance information, and records into the GGastro EHR
- Verify insurance benefits and obtain necessary precertification when applicable
- Communicate procedure information and patient instructions in a timely manner, including Rx preps as appropriate
- Notify the supervisor/administrator of instrument or procedural problems within established time frames
- Review cost estimates and financial responsibility with patients
- Handles patient phone calls promptlly and document interactions in EHR
- Handle patient portal messages promptlly and document interactions in EHR
- Work collaboratively with physicians, mid-level providers, medical assistants, and all other members of the care team to optimize patient outcomes
- Assist in resolving patient, physician office, and departmental concerns or complaints in a timely and satisfactory manner
- All other duties as assigned
Responsibilities related to Compliance and Work Habits:
- Maintains patient confidentiality, HIPAA rules and regulations
- Maintains a safe work environment
- Timely completion of all compliance training and testing
Qualifications & Certifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Ability to communicate oral and written ideas and plan effectively
- Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding is required
- Knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook proficiency
- Must demonstrate good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions. Refers situations beyond ability or function to proper person
- Must be a Licensed Healthcare Professional, i.e., Certified Medical Assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Registered Nurse
- Knowledge of GGastro EHR is a plus but not a requirement for hiring

Mental/Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work well under pressure with diverse groups of professionals and physicians
- Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment
- Must demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences within team and community
- May require working under stressful conditions and irregular hours on occasion
- May require working with frequent interruptions
- Work may involve prolonged periods of sitting, standing, lifting, bending, reaching and the ability to push or pull items weighing 30 pounds or less
- Required to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor
