Position Overview The Preschool Custodian & Maintenance Worker maintains a clean, safe, and fully operational environment for children, staff, and families. This role requires technical maintenance skills, high reliability, inventory management, and strict adherence to early childhood safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Simple Repairs

  • Perform basic plumbing repairs, including clearing clogged sinks/toilets, replacing flush valves, and fixing minor pipe leaks.
  • Execute routine electrical maintenance, such as changing lightbulbs/ballasts, replacing outlet covers, testing smoke/CO detectors, and resetting circuit breakers.
  • Conduct interior and exterior painting, drywall patching, and surface touch-ups.
  • Maintain school perimeters by sweeping walkways, clearing debris/snow, inspecting fences/gates for safety, and caring for surrounding grounds/playgrounds.
  • Inspect building structures daily to proactively identify and resolve potential safety hazards before children arrive.

Daily Custodial Operations & Sanitation

  • Deep clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, offices, food preparation spaces, and high-traffic areas daily.
  • Disinfect high-touch surfaces (doorknobs, handrails, light switches, play equipment) following health department guidelines.
  • Execute floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, carpet spot-cleaning, stripping, and waxing.
  • Empty, sanitize, and manage all indoor/outdoor waste bins, recycling units, and diaper disposal receptacles continuously.

School Security, Opening & Closing

  • Serve as an authorized keyholder responsible for opening and/or securing the school facility daily.
  • Arm and disarm security alarm systems and ensure all exterior doors, windows, and perimeter gates are locked at dismissal.
  • Conduct end-of-day walkthroughs to verify all lights, HVAC units, water sources, and kitchen appliances are appropriately shut off or set.

Inventory Management & Organization

  • Maintain a meticulously organized and locked custodial closet and storage shed.
  • Track, audit, and manage inventory for cleaning supplies, paper goods, soap, maintenance hardware, and lightbulbs.
  • Submit timely supply reorder requests to ensure the facility never experiences stockouts.
  • Safely label, store, and manage Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all cleaning chemicals in strict compliance with safety regulations.

Child-Centric Environment & Interaction

  • Ensure all hazardous tools, chemicals, and equipment remain strictly inaccessible to children at all times.
  • Maintain a warm, polite, and patient demeanor when working around young children, staff, and parents.
  • Assist staff with moving child-sized classroom furniture, playground equipment, and event setups as needed.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

Education & Work Style

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Work Ethic: Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to a strict daily schedule.
  • Punctuality & Reliability: Excellent attendance record and strict punctuality are required to ensure school opening and daily operations run smoothly.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and organizational habits regarding inventory tracking and facility maintenance.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to routinely lift, push, pull, and carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs or more).
  • Physical agility to bend, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, reach overhead, and stand or walk for extended periods.

Required Certifications & Training

  • Early Childhood Development Training: Completion of designated early childhood awareness and safe environment training.
  • Mandated Reporter: State-certified Mandated Reporter clearance for child abuse and neglect identification and reporting.
  • OSHA Safety Compliance: Completion of OSHA training, including Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Chemical Safety protocols.
  • Role-Specific & Continuous Learning: Completion of facility-specific equipment/systems training, with a commitment to being a continuous learner through ongoing professional development and updated health/safety certifications.
