TITLE

Position Description – Operator

PURPOSE

This document will outline the job duties for the position of Operator.

REPORTS TO

Operations Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and on-time delivery of passengers by means of public transportation

Responsibilities

  • Drives one of several different buses, coaches or vans in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner along a designated route within a defined time schedule.

  • Notifies dispatch of deviations, overload, accidents, or passenger incidents.

  • Notifies dispatch of passengers' medical or behavioral problems and bus mechanical or electrical trouble.

  • Stops at designated points to load and/or unload passengers.

  • Make certain that fares are deposited into the farebox correctly, distribute transfers, and dispenses information.

  • Advises passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.

  • Completes and submits written reports concerning passenger and bus incidents, preventable and non-preventable accidents.

  • Operates on-board computer, fare box and destination signs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with the ability to read, write, and speak English.

  • Perform basic mathematical procedures.

  • Must possess a valid CDL License with passengers’ endorsement and have had no suspensions or revocations during the last five years.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Deals with stressful situations occasionally. Must be prepared to always handle them.

  • Deals with the public 95% of the workday.

  • Uses decision making skills regularly regarding such things as emergency situations, traffic situations, and adjusting passenger schedules.

  • Must often make decisions quickly.

  • Concentration is essential to drive safely when confronted with distractions such as passenger conversation, radio conversation, traffic, etc.

Physical Requirements

  • Operating the vehicle is an essential function of the job.

  • Operator sits while operating vehicle approximately 80% of the workday.

  • Gets up as frequently as each half hour, for up to five minutes, when the schedule permits.

  • Stands and moves about the bus, transfer station and garage approximately 20% of the work- day.

  • Performs pre-trip inspection of bus by walking around and through bus.

  • Assists passengers in wheelchairs by securing the chair and by operating the wheelchair ramp.

  • Stoops or bends to secure wheelchairs in the bus, on the average of 10% of the workday--depends upon the number of wheelchairs.

  • Must be able to read and comprehend written material and distinguish material using close-up vision.

  • Depth perception, peripheral vision, distance vision, and color perception is required for driving.
