Sheet Metal Journeyman
Job Description
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're not looking for someone who still needs direction. We're looking for someone who can take a set of plans, walk a job site, and get it done right — and who's ready to help shape the next generation of sheet metal craftsmen while they're at it.
Santiam Heating & Sheet Metal has spent 30 years building a reputation for unmatched craftsmanship and integrity across the Pacific Northwest. Our Sheet Metal division specializes in custom metal fabrication and installation — roofing, siding, flashing, gutters, downspouts, and decorative exterior metalwork on commercial and residential buildings. This is where the trades meet the art of metal, and a journeyman is the one who sets the standard for how it's done.
WHAT THIS ROLE IS
We're looking for a skilled Sheet Metal Journeyman with at least 6 years of hands-on experience in architectural sheet metal fabrication and installation. You'll work independently — layout, fabrication, and field installation — lead jobs, and mentor apprentices on-site.
You'll read plans and specs, plan out the job, and execute clean, code-compliant installs with minimal oversight. You'll also be a steady hand on site: answering apprentices' questions, checking their work, and modeling the standard of craftsmanship Santiam is known for.
As we scale, this role has a clear path to Lead Sheet Metal Journeyman for the right candidate. We're building a culture that attracts and retains top talent — making Santiam a place where great people come to grow.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• $36–$42 per hour, depending on experience
• Opportunity to earn prevailing wage on public works projects
• Health, dental, and vision insurance
• Company vehicle + gas card
• 401(k) with company match
• Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
• Tuition/certification reimbursement for supervisor-approved trainings
• Advancement opportunities
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Fabrication & Installation
• Independently perform layout, cutting, forming, and assembly of architectural sheet metal products — roofing, siding, flashing, gutters, downspouts, and decorative exterior metalwork
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications to plan layout and installation sequencing
• Operate hand and power tools safely and correctly — snips, brakes, shears, rollers, riveters, drills — and select the right method for the job
• Install finished work per plans, specs, and industry standards, ensuring a clean, code-compliant result
• Work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, or aerial lifts, following all safety protocols
• Troubleshoot fit, material, or sequencing issues in the field and adjust the approach as needed
Leadership & Mentorship
• Lead and mentor apprentices on-site — reviewing their work, answering questions, and modeling proper technique
• Help apprentices build the hands-on skills they need to grow in the trade
• Coordinate directly with project managers, estimators, and foremen on scope, sequencing, and material needs
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site and shop area
• Represent Santiam professionally with customers and general contractors in the field
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Qualifications
• 6+ years of hands-on architectural sheet metal fabrication and installation experience (a Journeyman card or trade certification is a plus, but not required)
• Proven ability to coach or mentor apprentices and manage jobsite workflow
• Strong communication and accountability — people trust your word
• Strong blueprint and specification reading skills
• Proficient, safe operation of hand and power tools, brakes, shears, and related sheet metal equipment
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation
• Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights, and performing repetitive physical tasks
• Safety-minded, team-oriented, and detail-focused
• Forklift, boom lift/scissor lift, rigging & crane, and scaffolding certifications preferred
