Ignition Engineer - Data Center Electrical Commissioning Project
Job Description
Ignition Engineer - Data Center Electrical Commissioning Project
Role purpose
The Controls / Ignition Engineer will own the specialist controls element of the project team, with a strong focus on Ignition SCADA, PLC-controlled systems, industrial automation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. The developed controls program will be provided by the project, so the role is primarily focused on operating, validating, testing, and troubleshooting the controls system rather than developing the entire application from the ground up.
The engineer will support controls commissioning, verify system functionality, diagnose controls and communications issues, and ensure the supervisory system operates correctly with the associated field equipment.
Responsibilities
- Use Ignition SCADA to support testing, validation, and troubleshooting of the developed controls application.
- Verify that PLC-controlled equipment and field I/O respond correctly to programmed sequences and control logic.
- Perform I/O checkout and point-to-point testing between field devices, PLC/controls systems, and the supervisory system.
- Execute functional testing and sequence testing against approved project scripts and expected system operation.
- Investigate and troubleshoot controls faults, incorrect point behavior, failed sequences, device issues, and industrial communications problems.
- Support SCADA/HMI testing and confirm that graphics, alarms, statuses, commands, and system responses align with the physical equipment.
- Work closely with EPMS resources where controls, power monitoring, and electrical functionality interact.
- Use control schematics, electrical drawings, and system documentation to diagnose field, wiring, communications, or programming-related issues.
- Document deficiencies, test failures, and corrective actions, and support retesting through Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and commissioning activities.
- Support controls system validation and fault resolution to help confirm equipment and system readiness.
Qualifications
- Strong hands-on capability with Ignition SCADA and supervisory controls systems.
- Experience working with PLC-controlled systems and industrial automation environments.
- Demonstrated experience with SCADA/HMI testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Practical experience performing I/O checkout, point-to-point testing, and verification of field devices and control points.
- Experience executing functional testing, sequence testing, and controls system validation.
- Working knowledge of industrial communications and troubleshooting communications between PLCs, field devices, and supervisory systems.
- Experience with controls commissioning, system startup, and fault finding.
- Ability to read and interpret controls schematics and electrical drawings.
- Experience supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), or comparable factory or field commissioning activities.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to isolate field, controls, communications, and application-level issues.
