Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician performs field and laboratory testing, inspections, and observations of construction materials across a variety of project sites. This role includes working with soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and other materials to verify compliance with project specifications, building codes, and industry standards. You will use mobile and computer-based systems to document results, support project teams with accurate reporting, and have opportunities to grow your technical expertise through additional certifications, advanced testing assignments, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for field and laboratory assignments by reviewing project requirements, testing procedures, and documentation needs.
  • Conduct and document testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and other construction materials in accordance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Accurately record field observations, testing data, and inspection results, and prepare detailed, clear reports for project teams.
  • Use mobile and computer-based systems to collect, manage, and upload project data and testing results in a timely manner.
  • Inspect, calibrate, and maintain testing equipment to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Perform inspections and testing activities in accordance with applicable building codes, project requirements, and recognized testing standards.
  • Communicate findings, test results, and project updates to project managers, contractors, engineers, and clients in a professional and timely manner.
  • Help resolve field-related issues by providing accurate technical information and collaborating with project stakeholders.
  • Support quality assurance efforts by verifying that construction materials meet specified performance and compliance criteria.
  • Follow established safety procedures and quality control protocols while working on project sites and in the laboratory.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2–3 years of experience working in a construction materials laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience with construction materials testing, including concrete testing, soil testing, asphalt testing, and aggregate testing.
  • Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, including speaking, reading, and writing, to document results and interact with project teams.
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing practices and quality assurance principles.
  • Ability to use mobile and computer-based systems to enter, manage, and upload testing data.
  • Capability to inspect, calibrate, and maintain testing equipment to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Attention to detail and strong documentation skills to produce accurate and complete test reports.
  • Ability to work safely in field and laboratory environments while following established procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • One or more active certifications in construction materials testing are a plus.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) certifications such as Field Testing Grade I, Strength Testing Technician, or Laboratory Technician.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Special Inspector certifications in Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, or Soils.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications in Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, or Concrete.
  • Experience with concrete inspection and construction quality assurance.
  • Familiarity with construction industry standards and building codes related to materials testing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with project managers, contractors, engineers, and clients.
  • Motivation to pursue additional credentials through a credential incentive program and ongoing professional development.

Work Environment

This role involves working in both field and laboratory environments on a variety of construction projects. You will travel to project sites using a company vehicle to perform on-site testing, inspections, and observations, and you will also complete laboratory testing and reporting using specialized equipment and computer-based systems. The work includes handling construction materials such as soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates, and requires adherence to established safety practices and quality procedures. This is a Permanent position based out of Nashville, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
