Supporting VA Central Iowa Health Care System (VACIHCS) — Des Moines, IA
Full-Time | Contract Position | Pay: $28.50–$30.00/hour
About the Opportunity
Allmed Healthcare Staffing Solutions is building a medical coding team in support of a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs task order for the VA Central Iowa Health Care System (VACIHCS) under Solicitation 36C26326Q1002.
This is a 100% remote, U.S.-based position supporting Health Information Management coding operations for the VA. The work directly supports the accuracy, timeliness, and quality of healthcare services provided to Veterans.
We are seeking 4 full-time Medical Coders to support inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory surgical, and professional-fee coding functions.
Position Summary
The Medical Coder will assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes for inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory surgical, and professional-fee encounters.
Coders will work within VA-approved electronic health record and encoder systems while following official coding guidelines, VHA coding standards, productivity expectations, turnaround-time requirements, and quality-assurance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Code inpatient facility, outpatient, ambulatory surgical, and professional-fee encounters in accordance with official coding guidelines and VHA HIM Clinical Coding Program standards.
- Maintain a minimum 95% coding accuracy rate as measured through Government quality-assurance audits.
- Meet required turnaround-time standards:
- Inpatient and surgical coding within 5 business days
- Outpatient and professional-fee coding within 3 business days
- Abstract required coding and clinical data into the VA national encoder system.
- Review documentation and identify coding or documentation deficiencies.
- Resolve coding-related questions and queries using facility-approved escalation procedures.
- Apply Correct Coding Initiative edits, National Coverage Determination guidance, modifiers, and other applicable coding requirements.
- Maintain compliance with ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and other applicable coding standards.
- Complete required annual VA privacy, security, information systems, and compliance training.
- Maintain all required professional coding credentials throughout the assignment.
- Communicate proactively with the Coding Lead, Contracting Officer’s Representative, or designated leadership regarding documentation gaps, workload concerns, compliance issues, or other coding-related matters.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship required for this federal contract.
- Active medical coding credential, including one of the following:
- CCS
- CCS-P
- RHIT
- RHIA
- CCA
- Equivalent qualifying AAPC or AHIMA credential
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant medical coding experience.
- Working knowledge of:
- ICD-10-CM
- ICD-10-PCS
- CPT
- HCPCS Level II
- Official coding guidelines
- Ability to pass the required federal background investigation and obtain VA systems access.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all VA privacy and information-security requirements.
- Reliable home-office setup suitable for secure remote work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Inpatient facility and/or surgical coding experience.
- Prior coding experience within the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, or another federal or military healthcare system.
- Experience using 3M, Optum, or other national encoder products.
- Experience working in a productivity- and quality-driven coding environment.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently meet coding accuracy and turnaround-time standards.
Schedule
- Full-time position.
- Monday through Friday.
- Fixed 8-hour tour of duty, plus an unpaid 30-minute lunch.
- Work performed during established VA business hours.
- No routine weekend or after-hours coverage required.
- 100% remote work performed within the United States.
Compensation
Pay Range: $28.50–$30.00 per hour
Final compensation will be based on experience, credentials, and relevant inpatient and surgical coding background.
This position is also eligible for applicable Health & Welfare benefits in accordance with Service Contract Act requirements.
Contract Duration
- Anticipated start date: on or near contract award.
- Initial 1-year base period.
- Additional option period may be available depending on contract requirements.
