Job Description
Position Summary
The LTL Dock Lead is responsible for leading daily dock operations and ensuring inbound and outbound freight is handled safely, accurately, and efficiently. This position provides hands-on direction to dock workers and forklift operators while coordinating freight movement, staging, loading, and unloading.
The Dock Lead serves as the first point of contact on the dock for operational issues and is responsible for keeping the shift organized, productive, and on schedule.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate daily activities of LTL dock workers and forklift operators.
- Assign employees to inbound unloading, outbound loading, staging, and other dock responsibilities based on workload.
- Monitor employee productivity and ensure assigned work is completed accurately and on time.
- Ensure freight is staged in the correct destination bays according to routing instructions and destination codes.
- Verify PRO numbers, BOLs, manifests, pallet counts, destination codes, and other shipment information.
- Oversee outbound trailer loading and ensure freight is loaded onto the correct trailer and in the proper stop sequence.
- Confirm pallet counts and shipment information before trailers are released.
- Monitor freight placement and stacking to maximize trailer utilization while preventing freight damage.
- Identify and immediately address misloads, shortages, overages, damaged freight, incorrect labels, or other shipment discrepancies.
- Coordinate with Dispatch, Routing, Operations, and warehouse management regarding load changes, freight issues, and trailer readiness.
- Ensure changes to manifests or loading instructions are clearly communicated to the employees handling the freight.
- Monitor inbound and outbound dock flow to prevent congestion and unnecessary freight movement.
- Ensure staging areas and destination bays remain organized and freight is not left in unauthorized areas.
- Conduct shift handoffs and communicate outstanding loads, freight issues, equipment problems, and operational priorities to the next shift or management.
- Ensure employees complete required load verification and operational paperwork accurately.
- Verify daily forklift and equipment inspections are completed and immediately report unsafe or damaged equipment.
- Enforce company safety procedures, PPE requirements, forklift rules, and proper freight-handling practices.
- Coach employees on proper loading, unloading, staging, and freight verification procedures.
- Report employee performance, attendance, safety, or disciplinary concerns to management.
- Assist with training new dock employees and forklift operators.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized dock throughout the shift.
- Perform hands-on dock work and operate forklifts when necessary to support the operation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dock Supervisor or warehouse management.
Qualifications
- Previous LTL, freight dock, warehouse, shipping/receiving, or transportation experience required.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong forklift operating experience required.
- Strong understanding of LTL freight handling, loading, unloading, staging, and cross-docking.
- Ability to read and understand BOLs, manifests, PRO numbers, destination codes, and shipping documentation.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple loads and adjust manpower based on operational needs.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential misloads or shipment discrepancies.
- Ability to remain organized and make decisions in a fast-paced dock environment.
- Dependable attendance and ability to work assigned shift.
Leadership Expectations
The LTL Dock Lead is expected to lead from the floor and remain actively involved in daily operations. The Lead is responsible for setting the pace of the shift, holding employees accountable, communicating expectations clearly, and escalating issues to management when necessary.
The Dock Lead must ensure that safety and accuracy are never sacrificed for speed. Before freight leaves the facility, the Lead is responsible for making sure the team has followed the proper loading and verification process.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work on the dock for extended periods.
- Ability to safely lift and move freight as required.
- Ability to operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment.
- Ability to work around trucks, trailers, forklifts, and moving equipment.
- Ability to work in warehouse conditions that may include heat, cold, noise, and changing weather conditions.
