Job Description
The Superintendent oversees day-to-day construction operations in the field, managing commercial projects from start through completion. This role coordinates subcontractors and vendors, maintains project schedules, enforces safety standards, and ensures projects are delivered on time and within budget. The Superintendent runs projects independently with minimal oversight and plays a key role in project communication, quality control, and successful project closeout.
Responsibilities
- Manage all field operations from project start through completion, ensuring work progresses according to plan and scope.
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and material deliveries to maintain efficient workflow and avoid delays.
- Maintain detailed project schedules and ensure key milestones are met on time.
- Conduct daily site inspections to monitor progress, verify quality, and ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Perform regular quality control reviews to confirm that construction meets required standards and client expectations.
- Enforce OSHA and company safety standards on site to promote a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Communicate project updates clearly and consistently to project managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Proactively resolve field issues and identify practical solutions to keep the project on track.
- Review construction drawings and project specifications to guide field activities and prevent rework.
- Document daily reports, site activities, and project progress in an organized and timely manner.
- Coordinate project closeout activities, including punch list completion and final inspections.
- Participate in project turnover meetings and pre-construction planning sessions to understand scope, schedule, and expectations.
- Work flexibly, including nights when needed, to support project schedules and minimize disruption in occupied spaces.
- Manage one project at a time with full ownership of field execution and readiness for the next assignment.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of experience as a Superintendent in commercial construction.
- Proven experience managing interior renovations, retail buildouts, or tenant improvement projects.
- Demonstrated ability to independently run projects with minimal oversight.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct and manage subcontractors effectively.
- Solid knowledge of scheduling, sequencing, and overall project coordination in a commercial construction environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Outlook.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to and work at project sites.
- Experience in general and commercial construction, including interior renovation and retail construction.
- Strong communication and documentation skills for daily reports and stakeholder updates.
- Ability to enforce and adhere to safety standards and site protocols.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in occupied commercial spaces during renovation projects.
- Prior renovation experience in environments that require minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
- OSHA certifications or formal safety training.
- Multi-site project experience and familiarity with coordinating work across different locations.
- Comfort with participating in pre-construction planning and turnover meetings.
- Willingness to complete a 1-month training program for new hires.
- Interest in long-term advancement opportunities within a growing organization.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role in commercial construction, with the Superintendent primarily working on active job sites. The work involves managing one project at a time, overseeing interior renovations, retail buildouts, and tenant improvements, including projects in occupied commercial spaces. The schedule may include night work when needed to meet deadlines or minimize disruption to occupants. After project completion, the Superintendent spends one to two weeks in the office to prepare for the next assignment, complete documentation, and participate in planning. The role uses standard construction documentation and planning tools, along with Microsoft Office (Excel and Outlook) for communication and reporting. New hires participate in a structured one-month training program. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Hyde Park, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $38.50 - $48.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
