Job Description
This Mechanical Design Engineer II role focuses on enhancing and developing consumer products from concept through production. You will lead mechanical design, product development, prototyping, testing, DFMEA activities, and manufacturing support while driving continuous product improvement and cost reduction. The position requires close collaboration with sourcing, manufacturing, quality, marketing, and other cross-functional teams to improve product performance, support new product launches, and ensure reliable, high-quality products.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop consumer products and mechanical components from initial concept through full production release.
- Create and modify detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and documentation using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
- Develop, build, and refine prototypes, coordinating and executing testing and validation activities to confirm design performance and reliability.
- Perform DFMEA, design reviews, root cause analysis, and product performance evaluations to identify and mitigate risks and improve product robustness.
- Support manufacturing operations through material selection, component sourcing, design optimization, and ongoing production support.
- Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities while maintaining product quality, performance, and reliability standards.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including sourcing, manufacturing, quality, and marketing to align designs with business, customer, and manufacturing requirements.
- Apply plastics design, plastic injection molding, sheet metal, and machining principles to create manufacturable and durable components.
- Provide hands-on support in machining, fabrication, and use of shop equipment during prototype development and testing when needed.
- Own projects and tasks with a high level of independence, managing priorities, timelines, and deliverables with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Communicate project status, technical findings, and design recommendations clearly to stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in product design, development processes, and manufacturing support activities.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 3–7 years of mechanical product design experience in a professional engineering environment.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for modeling, drafting, and documentation.
- Experience designing and developing consumer products and mechanical components from concept through production.
- Demonstrated ability to create and modify 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Experience with product prototyping, including building and refining prototypes and supporting testing and validation activities.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability principles.
- Hands-on experience performing DFMEA and participating in or leading design reviews.
- Plastics design experience, including plastic injection molded components, highly preferred.
- Practical exposure to sheet metal design and machining processes.
- Hands-on experience with machining, fabrication, and shop equipment preferred.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including organizing tasks, managing timelines, and driving projects to completion.
- Ability to work independently with limited day-to-day supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and accountability.
- Strong self-management and project ownership skills, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Work Environment
This role is based in an on-site engineering environment located in Lancaster, PA, with a hybrid work model. Engineers divide their time between office-based design work, prototype development, testing activities, and manufacturing support on the production floor. The position involves regular cross-functional collaboration with sourcing, quality, manufacturing, and product development teams in a collaborative product development culture. Approximately 5–10% travel is expected for supplier visits, project meetings, and production assessments. After onboarding, a hybrid schedule is available, with Tuesday and Wednesday designated as required on-site collaboration days and remote work flexibility on the remaining weekdays based on business needs. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $85000.00 - $100000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
