Job Description

The Sanitation Technician plays a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant food manufacturing facility. You work largely independently throughout the plant, performing daily sanitation tasks and supporting production by cleaning equipment, structures, and work areas. This role involves routine and detailed cleaning, proper handling of chemicals and equipment, and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) to ensure product quality and a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a daily rotation checklist of basic cleaning tasks throughout the plant.
  • Vacuum inside mill structures and packing buildings to remove dust and debris.
  • Dust pipes, remove cobwebs, and maintain overhead areas in production spaces.
  • Clean major and minor spills during production as needed to maintain safe walkways and work areas.
  • Wash flour silos from top to bottom, both inside and outside as required.
  • Clean and sweep sifters, mill tower, packing tower, stairways, and balconies.
  • Sweep and clean spilled corn from outside corn silos and mill structures.
  • Wash out gutters, building structures, and roofs throughout the plant.
  • Wash production towers and other structural surfaces as assigned.
  • Pick up trash, pallets, cans, cardboard, and other debris throughout the facility.
  • Set up sanitation equipment and tools for various cleaning tasks as they arise.
  • Assist in taping and sealing warehouse areas, packing areas, box cars, and hopper cars.
  • Assist with fogging and the release of fumigants and/or insecticides in warehouses, packing areas, mills, hopper cars, box cars, and flour silos, following safety procedures.
  • Apply sanitizers and other cleaning agents in production areas according to established protocols.
  • Clean and sanitize interior drains, including rinsing, scrubbing, and flushing with sanitizer.
  • Perform detailed cleaning of interior production areas, including dusting, sweeping, pressure washing, and vacuuming.
  • Assist the mill team in cleaning production equipment during shutdowns and scheduled sanitation procedures.
  • Use, handle, store, and transport chemicals and sanitation equipment safely, following PPE requirements and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Practice good GMPs, including proper hygiene, housekeeping, and prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Perform miscellaneous sanitation and general labor duties as needed based on position and plant needs.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance, as presence is essential for this role.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to follow simple written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English to understand procedures, safety information, and documentation.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work to support consistent attendance.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights, including silos up to approximately 80 feet.
  • Capability to perform physical cleaning tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand on your feet for the entirety of a 12-hour shift when required.
  • Frequent ability to walk, climb ladders, and climb stairs throughout the facility.
  • Strength to push a cart loaded with cleaning equipment and products.
  • Understanding of and ability to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Basic ability to use and handle cleaning chemicals and sanitation equipment safely with appropriate PPE.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior industrial cleaning or housekeeping experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Previous experience in food manufacturing or the broader food industry.
  • Experience with janitorial, housekeeping, or general labor duties.
  • Familiarity with sanitation practices in a manufacturing environment, including sweeping, vacuuming, and industrial cleaning.
  • Comfort working as part of a team and contributing to a positive, collaborative department culture.
  • Motivated attitude with a willingness to take on a variety of cleaning and sanitation tasks.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions when tasks require outdoor work.
  • Comfort working at heights without fear and following safety procedures.

Work Environment

This position is based in a food manufacturing facility with exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather. You may work in areas with constant or intermittent noise at levels that require hearing protection and in dusty environments due to flour and other materials. The role is contract-to-hire, with eligibility to transition to a direct role after a set number of hours when internal openings are available, while remaining employed through the staffing partner until that time. The standard schedule is a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with opportunities for overtime and occasional Saturday work of approximately 3–5 hours about once per month. Cell phones are not permitted on the production floor and must be kept in a locker or vehicle. The dress code includes a hard hat (provided), clean jeans or work pants, a t-shirt with sleeves, steel-toe boots, and a belt, with clothing free of holes, tears, rips, or offensive graphics and without buttons or features that could damage product. This is a hands-on industrial environment where safety, cleanliness, and adherence to procedures are essential.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of EVANSVILLE, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.15 - $23.15/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
