MUSEUM BUILDING MANAGER
Location: Washington, DC
Type: Direct Hire
Salary: $75,000–$85,000 annually
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Museum Building Manager to oversee the daily operation, maintenance, safety, cleanliness, and long-term preservation of a historic museum facility.
The Building Manager will oversee building systems, preventative maintenance, contractors, vendors, facility projects, regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and capital planning. The facility is a five-story, approximately 55,000-square-foot building with 15,000 square feet of exhibition space.
This position requires a combination of hands-on troubleshooting, facilities expertise, contractor management, administrative coordination, and strong customer service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct daily facility inspections and ensure the building remains safe, clean, functional, and welcoming.
- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs, SOPs, inspection schedules, and maintenance records.
- Oversee HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, elevators, roofing, life-safety, security, and building automation systems.
- Supervise maintenance personnel, including scheduling, training, work assignments, and performance.
- Coordinate contractors and vendors for maintenance, repairs, security, fire protection, landscaping, custodial services, and other facility needs.
- Review proposals, monitor contractor performance, verify completed work, and resolve deficiencies.
- Support museum events, exhibit installations, room setups, and other facility-related activities.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, local building codes, and life-safety requirements.
- Support emergency preparedness and respond to facility emergencies, including weather events, power outages, flooding, fire, and HVAC failures.
- Assist with facility budgets, utility monitoring, purchasing, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Maintain accurate facility, vendor, maintenance, inspection, and compliance records.
- Assess equipment and building conditions and recommend capital improvements, replacements, and long-term maintenance strategies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant facilities, building operations, property management, engineering, or maintenance experience.
- Experience managing preventative maintenance, contractors, budgets, and facility projects.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, NEC, local building, and life-safety requirements.
- Proficiency with standard administrative software and building automation systems.
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Training or certification in HVAC, electrical systems, facilities management, or a related technical field.
- EPA Section 608/CFC certification, where applicable.
- Experience with museums, historic buildings, cultural institutions, or complex facilities.
- Experience with asset management, facility assessments, and capital planning.
SCHEDULE & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, with flexibility for evenings, weekends, holidays, and after-hours emergency response as needed.
The position requires regular walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs/ladders, working indoors and outdoors, using tools and equipment, and occasionally lifting or moving 50+ pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
