Job Description

Staff Accountant / Accounting Lead
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
On-site — Littleton, CO

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Staff Accountant / Accounting Lead to support our accounting operations and help establish accurate, consistent, and efficient accounting processes.

This position will have a hands-on role in day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping activities, including reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end close.

In addition to performing accounting responsibilities, this person will review existing bookkeeping work, identify and resolve discrepancies, improve accounting procedures, and provide hands-on training and mentorship to an assistant bookkeeper.

The ideal candidate is someone who can not only perform accounting tasks accurately, but also understand why they are being performed, recognize when something doesn't look right, determine the appropriate solution, and teach others how to perform the work correctly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-volume bank, credit card, account, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare and post general ledger journal entries.
  • Review general ledger activity and identify and correct discrepancies.
  • Process invoices, payments, and other accounting transactions.
  • Perform accurate and efficient accounting data entry.
  • Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
  • Maintain organized and accurate accounting records in accordance with GAAP.
  • Assist with month-end close and related accounting procedures.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and unusual transactions.
  • Review existing bookkeeping work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with catching up and cleaning up outstanding accounting work.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Support other accounting and administrative functions as needed.

Training & Mentoring

  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship to an Assistant Bookkeeper.
  • Teach proper procedures for daily, weekly, monthly, and year-end bookkeeping responsibilities.
  • Train on bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, invoice processing, general ledger maintenance, and other accounting functions.
  • Explain the reasoning behind accounting procedures rather than simply providing instructions.
  • Review work and provide constructive feedback and correction.
  • Establish clear, repeatable processes for recurring accounting tasks.
  • Create and maintain written procedures and checklists for key accounting responsibilities.
  • Provide guidance and support as responsibilities are transitioned and developed.
  • Serve as a resource for accounting questions, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.

Systems & Technology

  • Utilize Microsoft Excel extensively, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, sorting, filtering, and data analysis.
  • Work with ADP and Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Learn and effectively navigate existing accounting systems and processes.
  • Help improve organization, accuracy, and efficiency within accounting systems.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of general accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Demonstrated experience reconciling accounts and maintaining a general ledger.
  • Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, and data analysis.
  • Experience with ADP and Microsoft Dynamics preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to identify problems, investigate discrepancies, and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience training, mentoring, or supervising bookkeeping staff preferred.
  • Ability to explain accounting concepts and procedures clearly to someone with less experience.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with the team.
  • Ability to work on-site in Littleton, CO.
  • Must pass a background check.

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, but equivalent accounting experience may be considered.
