Biological Scientist
Job Description
Contemporaries is a government contracting firm supporting the National Institutes of Health in their efforts to hire experienced Biologists and Biological Scientists to support federal laboratory and research programs. These positions are ideal for an experienced laboratory professional with a strong background in biological research, laboratory operations, experimental procedures, data analysis, and scientific documentation. These positions will support NIH laboratory and research programs through hands-on biological research, complex laboratory experiments, data analysis, scientific documentation, and day-to-day laboratory operations. Ideal candidates will have professional laboratory experience and the ability to independently perform research procedures, operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, analyze experimental data, maintain detailed research records, and contribute to the development and improvement of laboratory methods and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and independently manage complex laboratory experiments and procedures in accordance with approved research protocols.
- Support day-to-day laboratory operations, including workflow coordination, supplies, equipment, samples, and inventory.
- Perform molecular and/or microbial laboratory techniques, including genomic extraction and sequencing-related procedures.
- Set up, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and sophisticated research equipment.
- Develop detailed experimental plans, including anticipated timelines and resource requirements.
- Record experimental data and maintain accurate, detailed laboratory notebooks and records.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data using appropriate statistical methods and prepare summaries, tables, graphs, and reports.
- Compare experimental findings with precedent data and scientific literature to assess reliability and significance.
- Conduct scientific literature reviews to identify new methods, procedures, and research applications.
- Document laboratory protocols, methods, procedures, results, and research-related issues.
- Maintain laboratory safety, organization, and appropriate storage and disposal of laboratory materials.
- Assist with developing new laboratory techniques and procedures and provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to laboratory staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related scientific field.
- Demonstrated professional experience performing biological or biomedical laboratory research.
- Experience independently conducting complex laboratory experiments and following established research protocols.
- Experience with molecular biology, microbial culture, genomic extraction, sequencing, or related laboratory techniques.
- Strong experience analyzing, interpreting, and documenting experimental data.
- Experience operating, maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Strong scientific writing, documentation, literature review, and research skills.
- Ability to organize laboratory operations, samples, supplies, equipment, and research records.
- Experience working collaboratively within a scientific or research laboratory environment.
