Job Description

Job Description
About the Position

Lydia’s House is looking for a warm, patient, energetic, and dependable person to join our team on Saturdays.

Saturdays are a busy and special time at Lydia’s House, when many of our children are home together with their mothers. We are looking for an additional staff member who genuinely enjoys children and can help create a safe, structured, fun, and nurturing environment.

This position is more than simply supervising children. The right person will be creative, flexible, able to multitask, and comfortable working alongside mothers who may need additional support, encouragement, and guidance with parenting.

Responsibilities

  • Help supervise and engage children of different ages throughout the day.
  • Plan creative activities, games, crafts, learning opportunities, and age-appropriate projects.
  • Help provide structure and positive routines for the children.
  • Encourage kindness, sharing, cooperation, and respectful behavior.
  • Assist mothers in engaging positively with their children and model healthy, patient interactions.
  • Recognize when a mother may be feeling overwhelmed and offer appropriate support while respecting her role as the parent.
  • Help manage multiple children, activities, and needs at the same time.
  • Assist with transitions, clean-up, snacks/meals, outdoor activities, and other Saturday routines.
  • Work closely with Lydia’s House staff to maintain a calm, welcoming, and safe environment.
  • Respond to challenging behaviors with patience, consistency, and compassion.
  • Be willing to jump in wherever help is needed.
The Person We’re Looking For

Our ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Truly enjoys being around children.
  • Is patient, compassionate, and nonjudgmental.
  • Is creative and enjoys coming up with new activities and ways to keep children engaged.
  • Can be playful and energetic while still providing appropriate boundaries and structure.
  • Is comfortable working with children of different ages and personalities.
  • Can remain calm when several things are happening at once.
  • Is a strong multitasker and team player.
  • Understands that some families may be experiencing difficult circumstances and approaches both mothers and children with dignity and respect.
  • Is dependable and understands how important consistency is to our families.
  • Can take initiative rather than always waiting to be told what needs to be done.
Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be especially helpful:

  • Childcare or daycare
  • Early childhood education
  • Teaching or classroom assistance
  • Recreation or youth programming
  • Family support
  • Social services
  • Camp counseling
  • Working with children and families who have experienced challenging circumstances
CPR/First Aid certification is preferred or willingness to become certified.
