Responsibilities
  • Restrain/hold animals of several species for examination and treatments
  • Assist in treatment of patients in concert with a veterinarian
  • Get weights on all patients prior to examination
  • Use our radiology software for medical records and submission of studies for review
  • Take digital photos of procedures/relevant lesions and save to patients' medical records
  • Run in-house laboratory specimens and record results in patient medical records
  • Prepare laboratory forms/specimens for out-of-office laboratories (Antech and others)
  • Import laboratory and radiographic data into patient medical records
  • Manage and oversee medical treatments (including collecting laboratory samples, administering SQ fluids, placing IV and urinary catheters, expressing anal sac, etc.)
  • Monitor critical patients
  • Prepare cultures for bacteriological examination
  • Perform emergency procedures including control bleeding, administer parenteral fluids & pharmacological agents under veterinary supervision, resuscitate with oxygen, establish open airway by intubation, perform external cardiac massage, apply temporary bandages or splints, provide external supportive treatment of wounds, burns, and heat prostration
  • Admit patients & obtain initial medical history from client
  • Counsel clients regarding home care, medication administration, pre/postoperative care, blood test preparation, etc.
  • Discharge patients with appropriate instructions
  • Fill/refill prescriptions and prepare medications as prescribed by the Veterinarian
  • Clean indoor and outdoor kennels, cages, and runs as needed
  • Help monitor inventory, rotation and expiration dates and report needs as requested
  • Assist in stocking exam rooms/treatment/surgery/radiology rooms as necessary
  • Assist in ordering of food/supplies/medications as requested
  • Assist in maintenance of areas both inside and outside of hospital (floors, walks, parking, runs, etc.
Required Skills
  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent
  • Associate’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Veterinary Assistant Certification preferred
  • At least one to two years' experience preferred
  • Experience handling a variety of animals
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Basic math and writing skills
  • Ability to express compassion
  • Advanced understanding of diseases/medications/anesthesia
  • Understanding of vaccinations, basic laboratory tests, common diseases and pet behavior
  • Knowledge of vaccination protocols, sterilizations, use of OTC products, etc.
  • Knowledge of computer software (Infinity and Office programs)
