Job Description

The Quality Control (QC) Technician – Bottling & Packaging ensures that all bottled products meet established quality, safety, and regulatory standards throughout the bottling, labeling, and packaging process. This role performs in‑process inspections, conducts quality testing, monitors bottling line performance, and maintains accurate documentation to protect product integrity and ensure compliance with internal specifications and regulatory requirements. The QC Technician collaborates closely with Bottling, Production, and Quality teams to identify potential quality issues and ensure finished goods consistently meet company standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre‑bottling quality checks on product, including sensory evaluation, CO₂ and O₂ levels, clarity, microbiological monitoring, filterability, and fill height verification.
  • Conduct in‑process inspections during bottling to verify fill levels, ullage, cork or screw cap integrity, capsule placement, label accuracy, and overall packaging quality.
  • Monitor dissolved oxygen pickup during bottling operations to ensure product stability and that quality standards are maintained.
  • Verify that packaging materials and dry goods meet established specifications, including label and carton color standards, glass bottle mold specifications, and packaging compliance requirements.
  • Confirm label compliance with regulatory requirements and internal brand specifications.
  • Verify the accuracy of lot codes, packaging materials, and labeling before and during bottling operations.
  • Collect, label, and retain product samples for quality assurance, traceability, and record retention purposes.
  • Conduct daily inspections of bottling line setup to ensure equipment cleanliness, proper configuration, and operational readiness.
  • Visually monitor bottling equipment such as fillers, corkers, cappers, labelers, and case packers to ensure proper operation during production runs.
  • Identify mechanical, operational, or quality issues on the bottling line and promptly escalate them to the appropriate production or maintenance personnel for resolution.
  • Assist with line audits and inspections to ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Maintain accurate quality control documentation, including bottling logs, in‑process inspection records, quality checks, and corrective action documentation.
  • Verify that incoming dry goods and packaging materials meet quality standards prior to use in production.
  • Support traceability and regulatory compliance by maintaining organized and accurate records of quality inspections and retained product samples.
  • Confirm that pre‑shift and post‑shift sanitation procedures for bottling equipment and work areas are properly completed according to sanitation protocols.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuous improvement efforts related to bottling efficiency and product quality.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures while working in laboratory and production environments.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned to support production and quality objectives.

Essential Skills

  • Must have bottling and quality control experience; experience does not need to be specifically from the wine industry.
  • Experience in wine, beverage, or food manufacturing environments is preferred.
  • Understanding of bottling and packaging processes and basic product stability concepts.
  • Basic laboratory or quality control experience, including activities such as titrations, measurements, or sensory evaluation.
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP principles, and relevant compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with packaging materials such as glass bottles, corks, capsules, labels, and cartons.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify quality deviations during production.
  • Mechanical aptitude to recognize potential equipment or bottling line issues.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced production environment.
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a production and laboratory environment.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing approximately 40–50 pounds as required.
  • Ability to perform repetitive laboratory tasks and work safely around production equipment, fermentation tanks, and bottling machinery.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a winery, beverage plant, or food manufacturing facility is an advantage.
  • Comfort working with compressed gases, chemicals, and cleaning agents in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Capability to support continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency and product quality.
  • Willingness to perform duties outside normal responsibilities when needed to support production.
  • No direct reports, making this an individual contributor role well‑suited to hands‑on quality professionals.

Work Environment

This role operates within both laboratory and winery production environments, with regular interaction across cellar operations, fermentation areas, and bottling facilities. The position involves working around winery equipment, fermentation tanks, bottling machinery, compressed gases, chemicals, and cleaning agents, often in areas with varying temperatures. The work is physically active, requiring standing and walking for extended periods, occasional climbing of stairs or ladders, bending and reaching, and lifting up to approximately 40 pounds. The schedule typically follows a Monday–Friday pattern but requires openness to weekend work, especially during harvest season and peak production periods when extended hours, evenings, weekends, and long shifts may be necessary. Attire is generally production‑appropriate, suitable for laboratory and bottling environments where safety, cleanliness, and readiness to work around equipment are essential.
