Job Description
This Phlebotomist I role is a float position serving multiple Patient Service Centers in the Lakewood and surrounding area. The phlebotomist assists with a wide range of specimen collection and processing duties, troubleshooting routine issues, supporting training activities, and recommending improvements to workflow. The position involves performing venipunctures and other specimen collections for patients of all ages in a fast-paced environment while ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and documentation in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles for patients of all ages in a fast-paced lab or patient service center setting.
- Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, strictly following established procedures and test-specific protocols.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring comfort and understanding.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure complete accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout processing.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures, placing them in appropriate collection containers and tubes with accurate labeling.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and follow established procedures to maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information and ensure accurate data entry using Microsoft Office Suite and laboratory systems as needed.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers in accordance with established policies to satisfy inquiries.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to specimen collection and testing requirements.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control protocols.
- Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing training activities, including being observed for approximately 40 blood draws at the start of the role.
- Support troubleshooting of routine workflow or specimen handling issues and contribute recommendations to improve work processes.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team across multiple float locations, adapting to varying site volumes that may range from approximately 35–50 blood draws per day.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in applicable states.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- 0–2 years of overall experience in phlebotomy or related clinical laboratory support roles.
- Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test orders.
- Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and basic communication tasks.
- Ability to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients of all ages.
- Understanding of physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
- Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety protocols in a clinical setting.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Prior phlebotomy experience in a patient service center, hospital, or outpatient lab environment.
- Comfort working with all age groups, including pediatric through adult patients.
- Ability to handle varying daily volumes of blood draws, typically ranging from approximately 35–50 sticks per day depending on site.
- Strong communication skills for answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to callers in line with established guidelines.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team across multiple locations in a float capacity.
- Willingness to participate in annual department trainings and ongoing skill development.
- Flexibility to adapt to different site workflows, equipment, and patient populations.
- Basic understanding of specimen transport requirements, including appropriate temperature control and packaging.
This is a float Phlebotomist I position based primarily in Patient Service Centers in the Lakewood region, with regular work at multiple locations including Brick and nearby sites. Training takes place at the Lakewood 1352 location, after which you will rotate among various centers such as Brick 88, Lakewood 70, Lakewood 1352, Jackson, and Toms River. The environment is clinical and fast-paced, focused on serving patients of all ages. Work is performed as part of a collaborative team rather than independently. Typical availability is required between 6:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with daily specimen volumes that can range from approximately 35–50 blood draws per site depending on patient flow. You will use standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials, while following strict safety, infection control, and regulatory procedures. Attire is consistent with a professional clinical setting, with appropriate dress and adherence to safety and hygiene standards.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
