Sheet Metal Mechanic
Job Description
This role focuses on fabricating, installing, and finishing interior living, working, and dining spaces on ships. You will use your first-class sheet metal skills to create and complete habitability spaces, ensuring high-quality workmanship and adherence to shipbuilding standards. The position requires at least five years of experience and the flexibility to work on either first or second shift at a shipyard location in the Midtown New York area.
Responsibilities- Fabricate sheet metal components for interior living, working, and dining spaces on ships, following specifications and drawings.
- Install habitability structures and assemblies, including bulkheads, ceilings, panels, and other interior ship components.
- Finish interior spaces to shipyard standards, ensuring clean, precise, and durable workmanship.
- Use appropriate sheet metal tools and equipment to cut, shape, assemble, and secure materials.
- Inspect completed work to ensure accuracy, alignment, and quality, making adjustments as needed.
- Collaborate with other trades and team members to coordinate work within active shipyard environments.
- Follow all safety procedures and shipyard regulations while working in Navy yard and industrial settings.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and care for tools and equipment.
- Comply with access requirements for secure facilities, including eligibility to obtain DBIDS credentials.
- At least 5 years of experience as a sheet metal mechanic, with first-class proficiency.
- Strong sheet metal fabrication skills, including cutting, forming, and assembling metal components.
- Demonstrated experience in shipboard habitability work, specifically interior living, working, and dining spaces.
- Ability to install and finish interior ship structures to shipyard quality standards.
- Capability to work on either first or second shift as required.
- Eligibility and ability to obtain DBIDS (Defense Biometric Identification System) access credentials.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in shipyard and industrial environments.
- Prior experience working in major shipyards or Navy yards.
- Familiarity with shipbuilding or ship repair environments.
- Comfort working in and around military or government facilities requiring controlled access.

Work EnvironmentThe position is based at shipyard and Navy yard facilities in the Midtown New York area, working within large industrial and maritime environments such as major ship repair and construction yards. You will work on active vessels and in shipyard shops, using standard sheet metal tools and equipment. The role requires flexibility to work either first or second shift, and access to secure facilities through DBIDS credentials. The environment is industrial and production-focused, with appropriate safety gear and work attire required to meet shipyard standards.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
