Job Description
The Payroll Specialist supports accurate and timely processing of payroll-related contributions and member payments, with a strong focus on data integrity, clerical support, and adherence to established processes. This role involves detailed data entry, reconciliation, and eligibility review for employee benefits such as health coverage, pension, and 401(k) plans, as well as assisting with accident claim subrogation and project-based work that relies heavily on research and Excel.
Responsibilities
- Post payroll contributions related to employee benefits, including health coverage, pension, and 401(k) plans, ensuring accuracy and proper allocation.
- Perform detailed data entry, reconciliation, and accuracy checks for payroll and benefits-related information.
- Review and follow established processes to determine member eligibility for health plan coverage on a monthly basis.
- Support accident claim subrogation by coordinating paperwork, preparing and mailing packets, tracking their status, and reviewing documents for completeness.
- Post premium payments from members as needed, maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
- Assist with project-based work involving data entry, research, and the use of Microsoft Excel to analyze and organize information.
- Complete general clerical tasks such as filing, document organization, and order entry to support office operations.
- Provide administrative support as needed, including customer service interactions related to payroll and benefits inquiries.
- Use computer systems and software to enter, update, and retrieve data efficiently and accurately.
- Maintain organized records and documentation to support audits, reporting, and internal controls.
Essential Skills
- Proven ability to perform accurate and efficient data entry, including Excel data entry.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining data integrity in payroll and benefits processing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general computer skills.
- Experience with clerical and administrative support tasks, including filing, document organization, and order entry.
- Ability to conduct basic research and reconcile information from multiple sources.
- Customer service skills to handle inquiries and provide clear, professional communication.
- High school diploma required.
- Two years of relevant experience preferred in payroll, benefits, accounting support, or similar administrative roles.
- Prior experience with light accounting functions and general office work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate’s degree preferred, ideally in Business, Accounting, or a related field.
- Experience working with payroll contributions, benefits administration, or member premium payments.
- Familiarity with accident claim processes or subrogation workflows is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, documents, and deadlines.
- Typing proficiency (WPM) sufficient for high-volume, accurate data entry.
- Ability to follow established procedures while identifying and resolving discrepancies.
- Comfort working with spreadsheets and using Excel for data analysis and reporting.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional office environment that emphasizes accuracy, confidentiality, and adherence to established processes. You will work primarily on a computer using Microsoft Excel and other office software to perform data entry, research, and clerical tasks. The position involves regular interaction with internal teams and members through phone, email, or in-person communication, requiring clear and courteous customer service. Standard business hours typically apply, and attire is generally business casual in keeping with a traditional office setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fargo, ND.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
