The Phlebotomist provides expert blood collection and specimen preparation services, ensuring high-quality, accurate samples with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This role combines hands-on clinical work with careful administrative and laboratory tasks to support excellent patient care and reliable diagnostic results.
Responsibilities
- 2 - 3 years of experience performing venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, consistently obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort to patients.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, helping them feel at ease and informed.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring all specimens are correctly labeled, centrifuged, split, and frozen as required by specific test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing specimens.
- Package specimens securely and prepare them for transport, following protocol to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow detailed procedures for handling and transport.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to support a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory environment.
- Update patient information and maintain accurate documentation related to specimen collection and processing.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests are performed and appropriate specimens are collected.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety standards and infection control procedures.
- Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as required for safe specimen collection and handling.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay current with phlebotomy procedures, safety protocols, and organizational policies.
- Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results as needed to address inquiries and support patient care.
- Provide phlebotomy services to pediatric patients, adapting techniques and communication to meet the needs of children and their families.
- Perform basic administrative tasks related to phlebotomy and specimen processing, demonstrating strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical setting with a primary opening in Yonkers. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The environment involves regular interaction with patients, including pediatric patients, and coordination with healthcare and laboratory professionals. The position is well suited for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and in-state travel between sites. Appropriate clinical attire and personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory standards. The work includes a mix of direct patient contact, specimen handling, and administrative tasks, all performed in a professional, detail-oriented, and patient-centered setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Yonkers, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
