CNC Machine Setup / Operator

Department: Machined Parts
Reports To: Machining Supervisor / Production Manager
Position Type: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Position Summary

The CNC Machine Setup / Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring CNC machining equipment to produce precision components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and established quality standards. This position requires the ability to perform machine setups, make tooling and offset adjustments, inspect finished parts, troubleshoot machining issues, and maintain a safe and organized work environment.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, quality-focused, and able to work independently while meeting production requirements.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, and other CNC machining equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Load and unload raw material and finished components.
  • Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, and workholding devices.
  • Set machine offsets, tool lengths, work coordinates, and other required parameters.
  • Make adjustments to feeds, speeds, offsets, and tooling to maintain part quality.
  • Verify first-piece and in-process dimensions using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and gauges.
  • Perform routine quality inspections and document inspection results as required.
  • Identify tooling wear, dimensional variation, machine problems, and other production issues and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Read and make basic edits to CNC programs when necessary.
  • Follow established CNC programs and setup sheets while identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain proper tool condition and replace worn or damaged tooling.
  • Perform basic machine troubleshooting and communicate more complex issues to the supervisor, maintenance, or engineering personnel.
  • Maintain accurate production, inspection, and other required records.
  • Follow all company quality procedures and work instructions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Properly handle raw materials, tooling, parts, and equipment.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement activities to improve quality, productivity, safety, and machine utilization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous CNC machining experience, including machine setup and operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining processes, tooling, feeds, speeds, and cutting conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • 5+ years of CNC setup/operator experience.
  • Experience with CNC mills and/or CNC lathes.
  • Experience with Fanuc, Haas and/or similar CNC controls.
  • Experience making basic CNC program edits.
  • Experience with CAM software.
  • Experience working with tight tolerances and precision-machined components.
  • Knowledge of GD&T.
  • Formal machining, CNC, or manufacturing training.
  • Experience with inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and optical comparators.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
  • Ability to frequently use hands and fingers for handling tools, materials, and small components.
  • Ability to lift and move materials and finished parts as required by the position.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and work around machinery.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and hearing protection.
  • Ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
