Machinist / CNC Operator – Threading of tubulars, Manufacturing tools and components for wellheads
Location: Mesa Machine, 8820 NW Loop 338, Odessa, TX 79764
Job Type: Full-Time | Day Shift / Night Shift
Pay: $25.00–$35.00 per hour
Reports To: Casey Cope / Nicholas Moriarty - Shop Foremans
Mesa Machine is seeking a skilled Machinist / CNC Operator to join our team in Odessa, TX. This position is responsible for machining, threading, manufacturing, repairing, cladding & hardbanding, oilfield, NDT inspections and other industrial components using manual lathes and CNC machining equipment.
The ideal candidate has hands-on machining experience, strong blueprint and measurement skills, and the ability to produce precision parts while maintaining quality and safety standards. Candidates with strong manual lathe experience, CNC experience, or a combination of both are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
• Set up and operate manual engine lathes and CNC lathes to machine a variety of pump jack, oilfield, and industrial components
• Machine and refurbish worn or damaged parts according to specifications and engineering requirements
• Machine components including shafts, bearings, gears, sleeves, tubular products, threaded connections, and other rotating or structural parts
• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, work orders, technical documents, GD&T, G-code, and M-code
• Select and verify appropriate tooling and complete machine setups before production
• Adjust tool offsets, wear compensation, speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and other machine controls as needed
• Operate hydraulic pipe-handling equipment to safely load and position drill pipe, drill collars, and other tubular products
• Monitor machining operations and identify malfunctions, defects, or out-of-tolerance conditions
• Perform precision inspections using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, ring and plug gauges, taper gauges, JSS equipment, and other inspection tools
• Maintain required tolerances, including tolerances of ±.001" or better when specified
• Perform routine machine maintenance and troubleshoot minor equipment issues
• Maintain tooling, machines, and inspection equipment in good working condition
• Maintain accurate production and inspection records, including completed and rejected parts, setup information, job times, inspection results, and machine downtime
• Collaborate with machinists, technicians, engineers, programmers, and other team members to meet production schedules and quality requirements
• Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, quality, efficiency, and turnaround times
• Follow all safety procedures, wear required PPE, and maintain a clean and organized work area
Qualifications
• Minimum 1–3 years of machining experience, depending on experience and skill level
• Experience operating manual lathes, CNC lathes, or both
• Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, feeds, speeds, and cutting techniques
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and GD&T
• Proficient with precision measuring instruments and tolerance-based inspection
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting
• Ability to work accurately with minimal supervision
• Strong attention to detail and ability to self-inspect work
• High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational machining training is a plus
Preferred Experience
• Pump jack or oilfield component machining experience
• Experience machining shaft fits, threads, bearing bores, and press fits
• Experience machining API, proprietary, and double-shouldered threaded connections
• Experience with Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or similar CNC controls
• G-code and M-code knowledge
• Experience maintaining API standards in a high-production thread shop environment
• Experience with additional manual machines such as mills, surface grinders, or drill presses
• Lean manufacturing experience
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for extended periods and regularly bend, reach, and lift or carry up to 50 lbs
• Ability to use approved assistance when handling heavier or awkward materials
• Comfortable working around rotating machinery, hydraulic equipment, metal chips, coolant, oil, and machine shop noise
• Ability to wear required PPE and follow all safety procedures
