Sign Language Interpreter in Chesapeake, VA

Step into a vital role supporting students’ access to education as a Sign Language Interpreter for a full school year in the Virginia Beach area. This contract opportunity places you in a dynamic academic environment, working primarily in a 1:1 setting with elementary-aged students. Your skills will help bridge communication, fostering connections and enhancing learning experiences for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Key Qualifications:

• Active Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification required
• Strong preference for candidates with an EIPA score of 3.5 or higher; the district will consider scores above 3.0 for interviews, or a QAS Score of 3 or better
• Experience interpreting for children, especially at the elementary level, is highly desirable
• Familiarity with Visaphonics is advantageous, though not required
• Ability to adapt to various school settings as needed
• Effective communication, flexibility, and strong collaboration skills

Role Responsibilities:

• Provide direct, one-on-one interpretation for assigned student(s), assisting them throughout the school day in both classroom and extracurricular settings
• Support student participation by adapting interpreting methods to meet individual needs
• Fill in and offer coverage at other campuses in the district if the primary assigned student is absent
• Work proactively with educators, staff, and families to optimize communication and inclusivity
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with all relevant educational and ethical standards
