Housekeeper/Room Attendant – Job Description

Location: City Express by Marriott – Manteno, Illinois
Position: Housekeeper/Room Attendant
Reports To: Housekeeping Manager, Housekeeping Lead, and General Manager

Position Summary

The Housekeeper/Room Attendant is responsible for cleaning and preparing guest rooms according to hotel cleanliness, safety, and Marriott brand standards. This position helps create a comfortable guest experience by ensuring rooms and assigned areas are clean, properly stocked, inspected, and ready on time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean assigned guest rooms thoroughly and within the required timeframe.
  • Make beds and replace sheets according to hotel standards and service schedules.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including toilets, tubs, showers, sinks, mirrors, fixtures, floors, and doors.
  • Dust and wipe furniture, lamps, phones, tables, headboards, appliances, and other surfaces.
  • Vacuum carpets and mop hard-surface floors.
  • Empty trash and remove used linens and towels.
  • Restock towels, toiletries, coffee supplies, cups, and other room amenities.
  • Clean refrigerators, microwaves, windows, mirrors, and doors as assigned.
  • Check rooms for damage, missing items, pests, safety concerns, or maintenance problems.
  • Immediately report maintenance issues and unusual room conditions to management.
  • Follow stayover and extended-stay cleaning schedules accurately.
  • Respect “Do Not Disturb” signs and follow proper room-entry procedures.
  • Turn in guest property found in rooms according to the hotel’s lost-and-found policy.
  • Keep housekeeping carts, closets, laundry areas, and storage areas clean and organized.
  • Assist with laundry, public-area cleaning, or other housekeeping duties when assigned.
  • Complete the assigned room board and notify management when rooms are ready for inspection.
  • Correct any cleaning concerns identified during room inspections.
  • Follow all chemical-handling, sanitation, safety, and personal-protective-equipment procedures.

Attendance and Professional Expectations

  • Report to work on time, in full uniform, with the required name tag.
  • Be prepared to begin working at the scheduled start time.
  • Notify management of an absence or emergency according to company policy.
  • Maintain dependable and consistent attendance.
  • Work cooperatively and respectfully with housekeeping, front desk, maintenance, and management.
  • Follow room assignments and management instructions.
  • Personal phone use must not interfere with work responsibilities.
  • Do not leave the property or end the shift until assignments are completed and management has approved departure.
  • Maintain guest privacy and never discuss confidential guest information.
  • Treat guest belongings carefully and never remove hotel or guest property.

Quality Standards

Every assigned room must be:

  • Fresh-smelling and free of visible dirt, dust, hair, trash, stains, and debris.
  • Properly stocked with clean linens, towels, toiletries, and amenities.
  • Free of streaks on mirrors, windows, and shiny surfaces.
  • Vacuumed or mopped, including corners and areas underneath furniture when accessible.
  • Checked for working lights, appliances, plumbing, locks, and other room features.
  • Ready for final inspection before being released to the front desk.

Qualifications

  • Previous hotel housekeeping or professional cleaning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete detailed cleaning assignments.
  • Strong attention to cleanliness and detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage time effectively during busy or sold-out periods.
  • Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, push a housekeeping cart, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25–40 pounds when necessary.
