Job Description

The Professional Development Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality professional development and employability skills instruction to program participants in a correctional education setting. The instructor will prepare and deliver engaging lessons designed to strengthen participants’ workplace readiness, communication, professionalism, career planning, and other skills necessary for successful employment and transition into the workforce.


In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Professional Development Instructor will provide administrative and program support to the START Program Director and assist with assigned projects and activities that support the overall success of the program.


The successful candidate must be professional, dependable, organized, adaptable, and comfortable working in a structured correctional environment. This position requires the ability to establish positive and professional relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries and following all facility rules, policies, and security procedures.


***Must successfully complete all required federal, state, facility, and/or institutional background checks and security clearances, including any screening required for individuals working with children.***


Essential Responsibilities


Professional Development Instruction

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver professional development lessons and activities that support workforce readiness and career preparation.
  • Provide instruction in areas such as:
    • Workplace professionalism and expectations
    • Communication and interpersonal skills
    • Workplace etiquette and professional behavior
    • Time management and organization
    • Conflict resolution and problem-solving
    • Teamwork and collaboration
    • Goal setting and career planning
    • Job search strategies
    • Workplace technology and basic digital literacy
    • Transitioning from training or incarceration into employment


Administrative & Program Support

  • Provide administrative assistance to the START Program Director as assigned.
  • Assist with program documentation, records, reports, data entry, and maintaining organized program files.
  • Assist with scheduling classes, meetings, workshops, presentations, and other program activities.
  • Prepare correspondence, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other administrative materials.
  • Support communication with staff, instructors, program partners, and others
  • Assist with tracking participant participation, progress, and program-related activities.
  • Help prepare materials and resources for students and staff.
  • Complete special projects and other administrative assignments as directed by the START Program Director.
  • Provide general support to the START Program team as needed.


Correctional Facility Responsibilities

  • Follow all facility security procedures, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and appropriate conduct with students and facility personnel.
  • Comply with all required security screenings, identification procedures, training, and facility protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and program information.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion when working in a correctional environment.
  • Work collaboratively with facility personnel and school/program staff to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Workforce Development, Human Services, Business Administration, Communications, Psychology, or a related field; equivalent education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • Previous experience providing instruction, training, professional development, workforce development, career services, or educational programming.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries in a correctional or institutional setting.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all required background checks and security clearances.


Preferred:

  • Experience working with adult learners or individuals preparing to enter or re-enter the workforce.
  • Experience working in a correctional, vocational, trade school, workforce development, or community-based educational setting.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, seminars, or group training.
  • Experience with career readiness, job placement, or employment preparation.
  • Knowledge of barriers to employment and strategies for successful workforce reentry.
  • Experience with administrative tasks


Required Background & Screening

Due to the nature of this position and the populations served, the selected candidate must successfully complete all required federal, state, facility, and/or institutional background checks and security clearances, including any screening required for individuals working with children or vulnerable populations.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required screenings and approval to enter and work within the assigned facility.
