Job Title: Lead Diesel Mechanic

Reports To: Fleet Manager or Maintenance Supervisor
Location: Panama City, FL
Position Summary:
The Lead Diesel Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and inspection of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This role provides hands-on technical expertise while supervising a team of mechanics to ensure all fleet operations run efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The Lead Diesel Mechanic plays a key leadership role in scheduling repairs, diagnosing complex issues, mentoring junior technicians, and maintaining high-quality service standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate the daily activities of diesel mechanics and service technicians.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulics, and other mechanical components.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules.
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software (Cummins, Tech Tool, J Pro etc.).
- Maintain accurate repair and maintenance records using fleet management systems.
- Order parts and manage inventory levels to minimize downtime.
- Ensure all repairs meet safety and environmental standards and follow OSHA and DOT regulations.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate mechanic team members to promote skill development and high performance.
- Communicate effectively with management regarding vehicle status, repair needs, and work progress.
- Assist in developing maintenance policies and procedures to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Participate in the hiring and onboarding of new maintenance staff when required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational certification in diesel technology preferred.
- Minimum 5–8 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and diagnostic equipment.
- Proficient in using repair tools, diagnostic software, and fleet management systems.
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) preferred or ability to obtain one.
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or OEM certifications a plus.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights or weekends, when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and perform manual labor as required.
- Work in various environments including indoors, outdoors, and under vehicles.
- Stand, kneel, bend, and operate tools or machinery for extended periods.
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a shop or garage setting, with occasional field service work. Safety equipment and adherence to company safety protocols are mandatory.
