Job description:

Trusted Hammer — Absecon, NJ

$75,000-$85,000 / year

Full-Time | W-2 Position

Trusted Hammer is looking for an experiencedField Supervisor / Lead Handyman who can independently complete residential repair and improvement projects while also leading and developing a field crew.

This is a hands-on working position, not a desk-management position.

We are looking for someone with broad residential construction experience who can walk onto a project, understand the scope, organize the work, assign tasks to other technicians, solve normal field problems, maintain quality, and keep the project moving without requiring constant direction from management.

Most of our work consists of smaller residential repair, maintenance, installation, and improvement projects, rather than long-duration new construction projects.

Typical projects may include doors, windows, decks, trim, drywall repairs, painting, cabinets, exterior repairs, minor remodeling, assembly, punch-list work, property maintenance, and general home repairs.

Minimum Experience — 5/3 Rule

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet both of the following minimum requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on residential construction, remodeling, maintenance, or home repair experience
  • 3+ years of verifiable experience leading or supervising construction workers, technicians, or crews

This is our 5/3 Rule: 5 years in the trades + 3 years in a leadership role.

Leadership experience must include actual responsibility for directing workers, assigning tasks, monitoring work quality, solving field problems, and helping ensure projects are completed properly.

Simply being the most experienced worker on a crew does not qualify as leadership experience.

This is not an entry-level position.

What You'll Do

As a Lead Multi-Skilled Technician, you will be expected to both perform skilled work personally and lead technicians assigned to your projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Independently complete residential repair and improvement projects
  • Lead small crews, generally consisting of approximately 2–4 technicians
  • Review scopes of work before beginning projects
  • Determine the proper sequence for completing work
  • Assign tasks based on each technician's skill level
  • Keep crew members productive throughout the workday
  • Work alongside the crew and personally complete skilled portions of the project
  • Monitor project progress against assigned labor hours
  • Recognize potential labor overruns before significant time is lost
  • Troubleshoot normal construction and repair problems in the field
  • Verify required materials, tools, and equipment
  • Inspect work throughout the project
  • Correct workmanship problems before they become customer callbacks
  • Train and coach developing technicians
  • Maintain clean, organized, and professional jobsites
  • Communicate professionally with customers
  • Take required before, during, and after photographs
  • Complete required job documentation
  • Report hidden conditions and additional work before performing work outside the approved scope
  • Communicate problems to management early rather than after hours have already been lost
  • Assist with improving Trusted Hammer's field procedures and production systems

Skills We're Looking For

Strong candidates should have experience across several of the following areas:

  • General carpentry
  • Door installation and repair
  • Window installation and repair
  • Deck construction and repair
  • Interior and exterior trim
  • Framing and wood repair
  • Drywall installation and repair
  • Painting and finishing
  • Cabinet installation
  • Flooring
  • Exterior repairs
  • Rot and water-damage repairs
  • Hardware installation
  • Residential maintenance
  • General remodeling
  • Troubleshooting and punch-list work

You do not need to be the best tradesperson in every category.

You do need enough construction knowledge and experience to recognize proper workmanship, solve common problems, direct other technicians, and know when a condition requires additional expertise.

What We're Really Looking For

Years of experience alone do not determine success in this position.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate that experience through results.

A successful Lead Technician should be able to:

  • Look at a job and develop a plan
  • Make decisions without requiring constant supervision
  • Solve normal field problems
  • Keep other technicians working productively
  • Teach less-experienced employees
  • Recognize poor workmanship
  • Protect project labor hours
  • Maintain quality while maintaining production
  • Communicate clearly
  • Take responsibility for the final result

If three technicians are assigned to your project, we expect you to manage the productivity and quality of the entire crew, not only your own work.

Compensation

Starting compensation is based on demonstrated technical ability, leadership capability, and field performance — not simply the number of years listed on a résumé.

Eligible employees may also earn up to $2,000 per month in additional performance bonuses.

Performance incentives are based on measurable results including:

  • Crew production
  • Completing projects within assigned labor-hour budgets
  • Workmanship quality
  • Preventing avoidable callbacks
  • Jobsite leadership
  • Crew productivity
  • Project documentation
  • Job completion and closeout
  • Customer experience

High performers should have the opportunity to earn more.

Poor production or poor workmanship will not be rewarded simply because someone has many years of experience.

Initial Evaluation Period

All candidates should expect their actual field ability to be evaluated.

The initial employment period will focus heavily on demonstrating:

  • Technical ability
  • Work speed
  • Problem-solving
  • Leadership
  • Crew management
  • Quality control
  • Communication
  • Reliability
  • Ability to follow Trusted Hammer procedures

Meeting the 5/3 Rule qualifies an applicant to be considered for the position. It does not automatically determine starting pay or advancement.

We are looking for someone who wants responsibility and can prove they are capable of handling it.

Career Growth

Trusted Hammer is growing, and this position is intended to become part of the company's long-term field leadership structure.

Potential advancement may include:

Lead Multi-Skilled Technician
Senior Field Lead
Field Supervisor
Field Operations Manager

As the company adds additional technicians and crews, successful field leaders may take responsibility for larger portions of field operations.

For individuals with long-term entrepreneurial goals, future opportunities may also exist within the Trusted Hammer contractor network for individuals who later establish qualifying independent businesses and meet applicable licensing, insurance, and program requirements.

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Monday through Friday is the normal work schedule
  • Occasional overtime or additional hours may be available or required depending on project schedules
  • Work is performed at customer properties throughout the South Jersey service area

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Reliable attendance
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Professional customer communication
  • Ability to use a smartphone for job communication, photographs, and documentation
  • Ability to safely use common hand and power tools
  • Ability to lift and perform normal physical construction duties
