Job Description
Make a meaningful impact supporting students as a contract Sign Language Interpreter in the vibrant Virginia Beach area, conveniently located near Portsmouth, VA. This full-time opportunity spans the academic school year, running from August 25, 2026, through June 15, 2027. You’ll have the fulfilling responsibility of working primarily 1:1 with elementary students, using your expertise to bridge communication and facilitate a thriving, inclusive learning environment.
As part of this role, you may be assigned to various sites in the area, ensuring flexibility and variety in your daily work. While Visaphonics is appreciated, it isn’t a requirement for this position. The main priority is delivering accurate, compassionate interpretation services to foster student engagement and success.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Holds a valid VA Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III.
- Strong preference for EIPA Score of 3.5 or higher; candidates with scores above 3.0 will be considered for interviews. QAS Score of 3 or better also considered.
- Experience interpreting in school settings, preferably with elementary-aged students.
- Adaptable with strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Comfortable working across multiple campus locations as student needs arise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 sign language interpreting for elementary students in the educational setting.
- Facilitate communication between D/deaf or hard-of-hearing students and staff, using preferred communication modalities.
- Support student participation and engagement both in and out of the classroom.
- Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and staff to adapt services as needed.
- Offer coverage at alternate campuses if assigned students are absent.
This is a contract-based, full-time position (35 hours/week, Monday-Friday), offering the chance to make a genuine difference each day.
