Job Description
Step into a vital role supporting elementary-aged learners as a Sign Language Interpreter in an educational setting near Virginia Beach! This contract opportunity offers the chance to make a genuine difference for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, working closely in a 1:1 capacity. Assignments are based on student needs, so flexibility and adaptability are key—you’ll primarily work with one student, but may provide coverage elsewhere if that student is absent.
Key Qualifications:
- Hold Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III.
- EIPA Score of 3.5 preferred, though those with a 3.0 or higher will be considered for interviews.
- Alternatively, a QAS Score of 3 or above will be considered.
- Prior experience in K-12 educational settings preferred.
- Strong communication skills and commitment to student engagement.
- Comfort adapting to changing assignments as needed.
- Visaphonics familiarity is a plus, but not required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken communication between staff and student using American Sign Language in an educational context.
- Deliver clear and precise interpretation to ensure accessibility for assigned student(s).
- Support a positive, inclusive learning atmosphere for students with hearing impairments.
- Be available to provide interpreting services at various sites if the assigned student is out.
- Foster effective collaboration with teachers, administrators, and other service providers.
This full-time role runs from late August through mid-June, aligning with the academic year. The position maintains a consistent weekday schedule with 35 hours per week, giving you the structure of regular school hours while allowing your interpreting skills to directly impact young learners’ educational journeys.
