The Orthopaedic Technologist provides hands-on clinical support under the direction of physicians and providers, including casting, splinting, bracing, and injury care for patients presenting with musculoskeletal injuries. This role plays a key part in patient comfort, treatment accuracy, and overall clinic efficiency.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Apply and remove casts, splints, braces, and other orthopaedic immobilization devices per provider instructions
- Assist providers during in-office procedures (e.g., fracture reductions, joint aspirations or injections)
- Set up and break down procedure and exam rooms; ensure instruments and supplies are sterilized and stocked
- Educate patients on cast and splint care, activity restrictions, and home care instructions
- Fit and adjust durable medical equipment (DME) such as crutches, slings, walkers, and braces
- Obtain patient vitals and injury history as needed
- Document treatment provided accurately in the EMR
- Monitor patients for signs of complications (e.g., compartment syndrome, circulation issues) and notify the provider immediately
- Maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked treatment areas
- Follow infection control, OSHA, and HIPAA guidelines
Education & Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an orthopaedic technology training program preferred
- Orthopaedic Technologist Certified (OTC) credential through NBCOT preferred, or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe
Experience
- 1+ years of experience in orthopaedics, casting, or a related clinical setting preferred
- Experience in an urgent care or emergency department setting a plus
- Working knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, casting/splinting techniques, and DME application
- Strong patient education and communication skills
- Ability to recognize and escalate clinical complications promptly
- Comfortable assisting with minor in-office procedures
- Detail-oriented with strong manual dexterity
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods; frequent bending, reaching, and kneeling
- Ability to lift or assist patients and equipment up to 50 lbs
- Manual dexterity for casting and splinting application
- Clinical immediate care setting with exposure to bodily fluids, communicable illness, and casting materials/dust
