Position Summary

The Preschool Teacher is responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for young children. This position plans and implements developmentally appropriate activities and curriculum, supports children’s social-emotional and academic growth, and works collaboratively with classroom staff, families, and management. The Teacher helps prepare children for kindergarten by introducing foundational skills and encouraging curiosity, confidence, creativity, and a love of learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning activities that support children’s language, motor, social, emotional, cognitive, and creative development.
  • Prepare children for kindergarten by introducing foundational concepts and skills they will build upon in elementary school.
  • Create a positive, welcoming, and nurturing classroom environment where children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to learn.
  • Provide attentive and responsive care while demonstrating genuine concern for the needs and well-being of each child.
  • Work with children individually and in small or large groups to support learning and development.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, healthy, and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Incorporate intergenerational activities and participate in campus-wide activities as scheduled, including activities involving the Nursing Home and The Maples.
  • Observe, document, and assess children’s development, skills, interests, strengths, and areas of need.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to signs of emotional, behavioral, or developmental concerns and communicate concerns to the Director as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records related to children’s progress, routines, activities, and interests.
  • Complete required child assessments on a bi-annual basis.
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with parents and families.
  • Communicate with families regarding children’s progress, needs, and accomplishments and bring concerns to the attention of the Director as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom staff and management to develop and implement curriculum consistent with the program’s philosophy.
  • Utilize appropriate technology for classroom activities, documentation, reporting, and curriculum development.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and program information.
  • Follow all St. John Lutheran Home policies and procedures and comply with applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and licensing requirements.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must meet the qualifications for a Teacher as established by the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) Rule 3.
  • Must have or obtain current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must have or obtain Abusive Head Trauma training and Mandated Reporter training as required.
  • Must complete required annual continuing education and training requirements established by DHS.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with young children, families, and coworkers in a professional and positive manner.
  • Strong communication, organization, observation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to providing a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, bend, crouch, kneel, push, pull, carry, reach overhead, and lift/lower objects as needed to perform job duties.
  • Frequently lift or carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift or carry 51–100 pounds.
  • Must have sufficient hearing, near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color discrimination, and depth perception to safely perform job duties.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and participate in activities in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to safely interact with and provide physical assistance to young children as needed.

Monday through Friday, daytime hours. No weekends or holidays.
