Summary
A well-established mechanical contractor is seeking an experienced Special Projects Division Manager to lead and grow a fast-paced commercial mechanical construction group. This leadership position combines project management, operations, estimating, preconstruction, financial oversight, and business development while maintaining direct involvement with key customers and strategic projects.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in commercial HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical construction, has successfully led project teams, and understands how to take projects from conceptual budgeting and preconstruction through field execution and closeout.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the overall performance and continued growth of the Special Projects division
- Manage selected strategic, high-value, and technically challenging mechanical projects
- Provide leadership and support to Project Managers and project teams
- Monitor schedules, manpower, procurement, subcontractors, and overall project execution
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to company quality standards
- Develop and maintain long-term relationships with owners and commercial clients
- Support design-build opportunities, negotiated work, and repeat business
- Participate in customer meetings, proposal presentations, and project pursuits
- Review conceptual budgets, estimates, and proposal strategies
- Support estimating efforts during peak workload periods
- Improve estimating-to-operations turnover and project startup processes
- Monitor project profitability, WIP, forecasting, billing, and cost-to-complete
- Review change orders and overall project financial performance
- Identify operational risks and implement corrective action plans
- Improve departmental processes, reporting, and workflow efficiency
- Champion company safety and quality standards across all projects
- 7+ years of commercial mechanical construction experience
- Background in HVAC, plumbing, mechanical piping, or related mechanical construction required
- 3+ years of leadership experience managing project teams
- Experience managing commercial mechanical projects from preconstruction through closeout
- Strong understanding of estimating, scheduling, procurement, project financials, and construction contracts
- Experience with project profitability, WIP, forecasting, billing, and cost-to-complete
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and construction drawings and specifications
- Strong client relationship and business development skills
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Design-build mechanical construction experience
- Experience with negotiated projects and owner-direct relationships
- California prevailing wage and public works experience
- Experience with Spectrum ERP, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar construction platforms
- Experience leading or growing a Special Projects or mechanical construction division
