Human Resources Manager

603 Legal Aid seeks a detail-oriented and proactive Human Resources Manager to support the organization’s HR functions. The HR Manager will play a key role in ensuring smooth HR operations while fostering a positive workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment and Compensation

  • Coordinate job postings and candidate outreach.
  • Screen resumes, conduct preliminary screening calls, and schedule interviews.
  • Conduct reference screenings.
  • Conduct background checks, research candidates, and new hire paperwork.
  • Write and update job descriptions and make exempt/non-exempt classification determinations.

Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Facilitate onboarding and orientation for new employees.
  • Schedule training during first 30 days of employment
  • Facilitate offboarding and conduct exit interviews.
  • Assist with post-termination processes (final checks, property collection, etc.).

Compensation, Benefits & Payroll Support

  • Evaluate compensation in line with organizational goals.
  • Evaluate benefit needs, satisfaction, and opportunities.
  • Assist employees with benefits enrollment and questions.
  • Maintain records of leave balances and PTO requests.
  • Administer protected leave (e.g., FMLA, ADA accommodation requests) and track related documentation.
  • Manage relationships with HR-related vendors (benefits brokers, background check providers, payroll processors, etc.).

Policies & Procedures

  • Draft, revise, and maintain employee handbook and HR policies.
  • Ensure policies remain compliant with evolving federal, state, and local employment law.
  • Communicate policy updates to staff and maintain a central policy repository.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for core HR processes (hiring, onboarding/offboarding, leave requests, etc.).
  • Review policies periodically and recommend updates based on organizational needs or legal changes.

HR Compliance & Records Management

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state labor laws.
  • Maintain up-to-date employee records, including personnel files and HRIS data.
  • Manage performance review processes.
  • Support HR-related components of grant compliance, including time-and-effort documentation and personnel policies tied to funder requirements, and assist with related audits.

Employer-Employee Relations

  • Identify and implement HR best practices.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for HR-related inquiries.
  • Support employer in handling employee issues, resignations, and terminations.
  • Advise and support supervisors and managers in addressing employee performance, conduct, attendance, workplace concerns, and other employee relations matters.
  • Assist with progressive discipline, performance improvement plans, corrective action, and other performance management processes.
  • Provide guidance to managers on applying HR policies and practices consistently and fairly.
  • Serve as thought partner to executive team on handling HR matters.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of employee relations matters and ensure confidentiality throughout the process.

Training & Development

  • Coordinate ongoing staff professional development opportunities.
  • Coordinate required compliance training (e.g., harassment prevention) for all staff.
  • Support supervisor/manager training on HR processes and policies.

Workplace Safety

  • Support workplace safety practices and administer workers' compensation claims as needed.

HR Metrics & Reporting

  • Track HR metrics such as turnover and headcount.
  • Prepare HR reports and updates for leadership and/or the board.

Office Culture and Engagement

  • Manage employee feedback initiatives.
  • Assist in organizing staff appreciation events and wellness programs.
  • Create a safe environment.

  • Experience with full-cycle recruitment, benefits administration, and employee relations.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

  • Strong conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in a small-organization setting where the HR Manager often wears multiple hats.
  • Nonprofit experience is preferred but not required.


Qualifications

  • Associate’s or bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in an HR support role.
  • Familiarity with Bamboo HR, or other HR software and payroll systems preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.


Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried position. The starting rate will be based on experience with an expected range of $57,500 - $68,750, which represents 3 to 10 years of experience. This position also includes 603LA’s generous paid time off and benefits package.
