Job Summary
We are seeking an analytical and detail-oriented Commercial Transportation Claims Processor to manage freight loss and damage claims for our heavy-haul, rail, barge and third-party logistics operations. This role specializes in handling claims specifically related to breakbulk cargo (non-containerized, oversized, or bundled commodities) transported via commercial trucking, rail and barge networks, including loading, unloading and storage. You will be responsible for reviewing cargo incident reports, verifying complex transit documentation, managing filed claims, and processing standard cargo payouts. Your expertise ensures financial loss mitigation while maintaining strong relationships with our logistics partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Claim Intake & Triage: Efficiently log initial notifications of freight loss, damage, or transit delays into our claims system.
- Documentation Verification: Collect and analyze cargo shipping documents, including Bills of Lading (BOL), rail waybills, delivery receipts, interchange reports, contracts and freight release forms.
- Breakbulk Analysis: Gather and evaluate damage reports, surveyors' reports, rigging logs, and photographs, video and other relevant evidence.
- Liability & Coverage Review: Work with insurance carriers to determine liability and coverage under commercial transit policies, transport contracts and carrier tariffs.
- Claims Processing & Settlement: Validate and process cargo claims, ensuring accurate calculations of actual cash value or contractual limits.
- Multimodal Coordination: Communicate clearly and professionally with motor carriers, class I railroads, port authorities, and third-party adjusters to gather missing details.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Risk Management or Business.
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience in cargo claims processing, freight auditing, freight forwarding, or transportation operations.
- Industry Knowledge: Basic understanding of commercial trucking operations, rail freight mechanics, and the physical characteristics of breakbulk / project cargo.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong typing speed and familiarity with logistics management platforms, transportation management systems (TMS), or specialized claims auditing software.
- Critical Thinking: Strong ability to cross-reference conflicting transit logs, verify timelines, and identify potential fraud.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to successfully negotiate with rigid carrier dispute departments.
