Position Summary
The Construction Laborer is an essential member of the underground utility construction crew. This position assists the Foreman, Equipment Operators, and other crew members with the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground utilities. The ideal candidate is dependable, hardworking, safety-minded, and willing to learn. This is a hands-on position that requires working outdoors, performing physical labor, and working around heavy equipment and active construction operations.

Reports To: Dand Woods, Superintendent
Core Responsibilities
Underground Utility Construction
- Assist with installation of underground utility systems according to project plans and specifications.
- Assist with excavation, trenching, bedding, pipe installation, backfilling, compaction, and restoration.
- Perform hand digging and excavation around existing utilities as directed.
- Assist with setting pipe, fittings, structures, manholes, boxes, and other underground utility components.
- Assist Equipment Operators and Foremen with positioning, measuring, leveling, and alignment.
- Help maintain proper grades, elevations, depths, and alignment.
- Assist with locating and exposing existing utilities.
- Perform general construction and site cleanup as needed.
Crew Support
- Follow instructions from the Foreman and work effectively as part of a crew.
- Assist Equipment Operators with spotting and safely guiding equipment.
- Communicate with equipment operators using proper hand signals and radio communication when required.
- Help load, unload, move, and stage materials and tools.
- Assist with traffic control and maintaining safe work zones when assigned.
- Support other crew members to keep the job moving efficiently.
- Be willing to perform different tasks throughout the workday based on project needs.
Safety
- Follow all company safety policies and jobsite requirements.
- Wear required PPE at all times.
- Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- Maintain awareness of heavy equipment, vehicles, open excavations, and other hazards.
- Follow proper trenching and excavation safety procedures.
- Never enter an excavation or trench unless authorized and the required safety measures are in place.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and damaged equipment immediately.
- Maintain a safety-first mindset and look out for the safety of fellow crew members.
Tools, Equipment & Materials
- Properly use and care for hand tools, power tools, and assigned equipment.
- Assist with daily equipment and tool inspections.
- Keep tools, equipment, and materials organized.
- Report damaged or missing tools and equipment to the Foreman.
- Help prevent unnecessary material waste and damage.
- Maintain a clean and organized jobsite.
Jobsite Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean and professional work area.
- Follow project schedules and daily production goals.
- Work efficiently while maintaining quality and safety.
- Communicate problems or changing site conditions to the Foreman.
- Maintain a professional attitude when working with customers, inspectors, general contractors, and other subcontractors.
- Represent SubTerra Utilities professionally on every jobsite.
Qualifications

- Previous construction, utility, excavation, or general labor experience preferred but not required.
- Willingness to learn and develop construction skills.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
- Positive attitude and willingness to work.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
- Ability to travel throughout Texas as project requirements dictate.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Previous experience with underground utilities or civil construction.
- Experience with hand tools and power tools.
- Experience with pipe installation, trenching, excavation, or backfill operations.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Previous experience working around excavators, skid steers, loaders, or other heavy equipment.
- Ability to understand basic measurements, grades, and elevations.
