Job Summary

The Produce Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the produce department, including ordering, receiving, quality control, staffing, merchandising, and profitability. This role requires strong product knowledge, attention to freshness and quality, and the ability to lead a team in a fast-paced retail environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise produce department staff.
  • Order produce from vendors/distributors and manage delivery schedules.
  • Inspect incoming produce for quality, freshness, and proper temperature upon receiving.
  • Trim, wash, package, and rotate stock to maintain freshness and minimize spoilage/shrink.
  • Build and maintain attractive, well-stocked produce displays.
  • Monitor and adjust pricing, signage, and promotions in coordination with store management.
  • Track department sales, shrink, and profitability against budget/targets.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and labeling regulations.
  • Maintain proper cold storage and cooler/case temperatures.
  • Handle customer questions, special requests, and complaints related to produce.
  • Maintain accurate records of ordering, receiving, and inventory counts.
  • Ensure equipment (misting systems, coolers, scales) is maintained and working properly.
  • Collaborate with store manager on seasonal items, promotions, and store-wide initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by store management.


Qualifications

  • Previous produce, grocery, or food service management experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of produce varieties, seasonality, and quality standards.
  • Working knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Proven leadership and staff management skills.
  • Strong organizational and inventory/ordering management skills.
  • Ability to read and analyze sales, shrink, and cost reports.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills for scheduling, ordering, and reporting systems.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in cool, damp conditions (coolers, misting areas).
  • Ability to bend, reach, and move product throughout a shift.
  • Ability to safely operate produce equipment (scales, wrapping/cutting tools).
