Job Description
Step into an impactful role supporting students as a Sign Language Interpreter in an engaging high school setting near the New Orleans area. This full-time contract position provides the rewarding opportunity to bridge communication gaps for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, making a significant difference throughout the academic year.
Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at a professional level
- EIPA score of 4.0 (with written component), or nationally recognized RID or NIC certification (written required)
- Active listing on the Louisiana Interpreter Registry (LCDC Interpreter Registry - Dept. of Health)
- Experience working with high school-aged students in an educational environment preferred
- Ability to successfully complete required fingerprinting and drug screening prior to the start date
Core Responsibilities:
- Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and peers through accurate and effective interpreting
- Assist students in full participation in coursework, school activities, and social interactions
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical interpreting standards
- Collaborate with school staff and special education teams to best support students’ learning needs
- Adapt interpretation methods based on student preferences and instructional contexts
This position follows the school calendar with a consistent weekday schedule—35 hours per week from August through the end of May—making it ideal for those seeking a predictable routine. The caseload is focused on high school students, with assignments and specifics to be determined in collaboration with school staff.
