Our client is looking for a Maintenance Manager - Energy Center & Wastewater Treatment in Detroit, MI!
This contract opportunity (possible extension or direct hire for the right candidate). Starting pay range $34 to $37.90 an hour.
The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the plant's Energy Center and Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTP). This position provides leadership to skilled trades employees, contractors, and support personnel to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation of critical utility systems that support manufacturing.
The supervisor is responsible for maintaining plant utility systems including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, compressed air systems, water distribution, wastewater treatment equipment, pumps, piping systems, HVAC infrastructure, and associated automation and control systems. The role ensures equipment reliability, environmental compliance, preventive maintenance execution, emergency response, and continuous improvement initiatives while supporting uninterrupted manufacturing operations.
The successful candidate will lead maintenance planning, prioritize corrective and preventive maintenance activities, manage contractors, drive equipment reliability improvements, and promote a strong safety culture while working closely with Production, Engineering, Environmental, Safety, and UAW represented employees.

Responsibilities:
- Supervise skilled trades employees responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Energy Center and Wastewater Treatment Plant. Document and manage trades schedule and overtime.
- Ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical utility systems supporting plant manufacturing.
- Manage daily maintenance activities including preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance.
- Prioritize work orders, allocate manpower, and coordinate maintenance schedules to minimize production downtime.
- Maintain compliance with all environmental regulations including wastewater discharge permits, water treatment requirements, air permits, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ensure all wastewater treatment processes operate within regulatory limits while maintaining accurate operational and compliance records.
- Lead troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, instrumentation, and process control issues.
- Support operation and maintenance of:
- Industrial boilers
- Chillers and chilled water systems
- Cooling towers
- Compressed air systems
- HVAC equipment
- Pumps and piping systems
- Heat exchangers
- Water softening and treatment systems
- Wastewater treatment equipment
- Chemical feed systems
- Manage PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, instrumentation, and industrial automation systems supporting Energy Center and WWTP operations.
- Document, manage and communicate status of equipment.
- Coordinate outside contractors, vendors, and service providers while ensuring compliance with plant safety requirements.
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
- Analyze equipment failures and lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities to implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Support capital improvement projects from planning through installation and commissioning.
- Manage maintenance budgets, inventories, spare parts, and procurement activities.
- Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (TMS) to manage work orders, preventive maintenance, labor utilization, and equipment history.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including equipment uptime, MTTR, MTBF, PM compliance, utility consumption, and maintenance backlog.
- Lead daily Shop Floor Management (SFM/SIS) meetings and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, employee development, and operational excellence.
Requirements:
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related technical field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in manufacturing, industrial facilities, or automotive operations.
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or team leadership experience leading skilled trades personnel.
- Working knowledge of industrial Energy Center operations and Wastewater Treatment Plant processes.
- Experience supervising preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of industrial mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft software suite.
- Ability to work any shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required to support plant operations.
