Emergency Vehicle Upfitter Technician
Job Description
About This Role
Auto Action Technologies is a SoundOff Signal authorized emergency vehicle upfitter in Kenilworth, NJ. We build police interceptors, fire vehicles, EMS units, transit buses, and government fleet vehicles for agencies across the tri-state area. Our shop runs IPC-620 certified technicians and a strict 3-stage quality control process.
As an Upfitter Technician, you work independently on full vehicle builds from start to finish. You own your bay and your build — executing complete law enforcement, fire, and EMS conversions with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
• Execute complete emergency vehicle upfits independently — police interceptors, fire, EMS, and fleet vehicles
• Install, wire, and program lights, sirens, control systems, and accessories per build sheets
• Perform 12-volt electrical work: power distribution, circuit protection, and grounding
• Read and execute wiring diagrams and installation schematics without supervision
• Conduct full quality inspections on completed builds covering function, aesthetics, and safety
• Remove and reinstall interior trim panels professionally
• Train and guide Level C technicians assigned to your bay
• Coordinate with shop supervisor on build schedules and parts requirements
Requirements
• 3 or more years of automotive electrical or emergency vehicle upfitting experience
• EVT Level 1 certification required — Level 2 preferred (testing fees paid by AAT)
• Proficiency with 12/24-volt automotive electrical systems, power distribution, and CAN bus basics
• Experience with SoundOff Signal, Whelen, Federal Signal, or Code 3 platforms
• Ability to read and execute complex wiring schematics independently
• Fabrication skills: console and cabinet installation, custom mounting, and interior trim work
• Familiarity with Ford Police Interceptor, Chevy Tahoe/Silverado, and Ram platforms preferred
• Valid driver's license required
• Strong attention to detail and professional pride in build quality
What We Offer
• Base pay $22–$28/hour plus per-vehicle commission — your output drives your income
• EVT Level 1 and Level 2 certification support — testing fees paid by AAT
• Clear path to Lead Technician designation and Level A pay
• Medical and Dental insurance
• 401(k) with company contributions
• A real shop doing real public safety builds — not a dealership or service center
