Facilities Maintenance Assistant
Job Description

The 40-hour per week Building Maintenance Tech at McWane Science Center in downtown Birmingham is responsible for assisting with the daily preventive maintenance and upkeep of the entire facility and property; set-up and break-down of tables, chairs, etc. for events and reserved lunches; handling incoming shipments of materials/packages; facilitating safety and evacuation procedures; and assisting all other departments as needed.
Position will generally be scheduled Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30AM until 3:30PM. Shift times may vary depending on business needs.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High School diploma or GED.
2. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a situation requiring good judgment and the exercise of responsibility for individuals and property.
3. General mechanical aptitude.
4. Experience in plumbing, painting, dry wall repair, minor electrical and minor HVAC.
5. CPR certified or willing/able to become CPR certified.
6. Must be dependable and able to work flexible hours including nights and holidays. This position requires weekend work.
7. Must possess a valid Driver License subject to acceptable annual motor vehicle reports. Must provide verification of valid minimum liability insurance as required by State law.
10. Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
11. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Minimum Physical Qualifications
- Capable of regularly lifting, moving, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects, including tables, desks, chairs, and other equipment, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and exert up to 75 lbs. of pushing or pulling force.
- Must be able to quickly assess situations, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately to emergencies, visitor concerns, theft, alarms, and other incidents.
- Must be able to access all areas of the museum, including stairs, catwalks, ladders, and confined spaces, and remain mobile for 6 to 8 hours per day through standing, walking, climbing, crawling, and other physical activities as required.
- Must be able to operate and maintain building safety and facility systems, including opening and closing circuit breaker boxes, resetting alarms, operating electric lifting devices, and using fire extinguishers effectively.
- Must be able to safely climb 8-10 foot ladders and perform work at elevated heights, including dusting, equipment adjustment, maintenance tasks, and operation of lifting equipment.
- Must be able to clearly communicate and enunciate using portable radios, public address systems, and direct verbal communication.
- Must be proficient in the safe use of common hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and possess general maintenance skills.
- Must be able to read, comprehend, and follow OSHA Safety Data Sheets (SDS), product labels, safety procedures, and operating instructions.
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to perform job duties safely and effectively.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely in environments involving high noise levels, chemicals, fumes, vapors, and other occupational exposures.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and maintain any required driving credentials.
