Job Summary

The Interim/Floating Director of Nursing (DON) provides critical nursing leadership and support across our portfolio of long-term care facilities. This position is responsible for stepping into various nursing home locations as needed, either as an interim DON during vacancies or to provide additional nursing leadership and operational support.

The ideal candidate is an experienced nursing leader who is flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in different facility environments. This role requires strong clinical knowledge, leadership skills, regulatory expertise, and the ability to quickly assess facility needs and implement effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Interim Nursing Leadership

  • Step into Director of Nursing roles on a temporary basis during vacancies, transitions, or planned leaves of absence

  • Provide strong clinical and operational nursing leadership to ensure continuity of resident care

  • Oversee nursing department operations and ensure appropriate staffing and coverage

  • Monitor quality of care and address clinical concerns promptly

  • Support and mentor nursing leadership and staff

Nursing Operations & Support

  • Oversee daily nursing operations and coordinate with department leaders

  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance management of nursing staff

  • Review staffing needs and help develop effective schedules and staffing plans

  • Monitor nursing practices to ensure compliance with facility policies and procedures

  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives and nursing department goals

  • Provide hands-on leadership and support during periods of increased facility need

Clinical Oversight

  • Ensure residents receive safe, compassionate, and high-quality nursing care

  • Monitor resident conditions and ensure appropriate assessments, interventions, and follow-up

  • Review clinical documentation and ensure accurate and timely completion

  • Oversee medication management, infection prevention, wound care, falls, and other key clinical programs

  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, rehabilitation staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team

  • Participate in care planning and ensure resident care plans are appropriately implemented

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing skilled nursing facilities

  • Prepare nursing departments for state surveys, inspections, and audits

  • Assist with responding to deficiencies and developing plans of correction

  • Monitor compliance with nursing policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure required clinical documentation and reporting are completed accurately and timely

Staff Development & Leadership

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and support to nursing staff and leadership

  • Assist with staff education and competency development

  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and professional development

  • Support facility leadership in addressing performance and staffing concerns

  • Help establish and maintain a positive nursing department culture

Resident & Family Relations

  • Build positive relationships with residents and their families

  • Respond to resident and family concerns in a timely and professional manner

  • Promote resident-centered care and advocate for resident needs

  • Ensure concerns are appropriately investigated, addressed, and documented

Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement

  • Participate in QAPI initiatives and nursing quality improvement programs

  • Monitor clinical outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement

  • Review trends related to falls, infections, wounds, rehospitalizations, and other quality indicators

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve nursing outcomes

Ad-Hoc Support

  • Provide additional nursing leadership and support based on facility needs

  • Assist with onboarding new DONs and nursing leadership

  • Support facilities through transitions, staffing challenges, surveys, and other operational priorities

  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred; ADN considered based on experience

  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted RN license in the applicable state(s)

  • Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of nursing leadership experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or a similar healthcare setting

  • Previous experience as a Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, or senior nursing leader strongly preferred

  • Experience with state and federal skilled nursing regulations and surveys

  • Strong knowledge of clinical standards, nursing practices, and quality improvement

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities

  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a variety of facility environments

Other Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel between facilities as needed

  • Ability to quickly adapt to different facility cultures, leadership teams, and operational needs

  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays based on facility requirements

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel as required

Work Environment

This position requires working in multiple skilled nursing and long-term care facilities. The Interim/Floating DON must be comfortable adapting to different teams, resident populations, staffing structures, and operational challenges while maintaining consistent standards of nursing care.
