Generator Service Technician
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Generator Service Technician with excellent communication and customer service skills. The ideal candidate will have several years of generator industry experience, or equivalent military, automotive, transportation, mechanical, or electrical experience.
The Generator Service Technician will perform installation, maintenance, diagnostics, testing, and repair of generator systems ranging from 2KW to 3MW. This position works primarily in the field with minimal supervision and requires the ability to explain technical issues to customers, facilitate repairs, and maintain a professional representation of the company.
Experience with automatic and static transfer switches (ATS) and multiple-unit paralleling systems is highly preferred.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform generator service and maintenance in both shop and field environments.
- Perform engine services, load testing, ATS testing, and ATS repairs.
- Diagnose and repair diesel and gaseous fuel systems.
- Perform minor and major diesel and gaseous engine repairs.
- Conduct generator-end testing, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Diagnose engine, electrical, and generator component problems.
- Read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and technical documentation.
- Properly use diagnostic tools, service literature, and testing equipment to troubleshoot machine systems and components.
- Evaluate equipment and components for serviceability and determine parts reusability in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Source replacement parts and install complete generator packages and peripheral equipment using engineering-provided materials.
- Perform system evaluations and communicate technical findings and recommendations to customers.
- Complete service reports accurately, legibly, and in a timely manner.
- Maintain accountability for quality, safety, and workmanship.
- Work with and provide direction to other technicians and apprentices to ensure timely, high-quality repairs.
- Share technical knowledge, experience, and troubleshooting techniques with fellow technicians.
- Stay current with new technologies, diagnostic methods, and generator systems.
- Follow all established company policies, procedures, and manufacturer specifications.
- Safely operate forklifts, heavy equipment, and mobile cranes in accordance with OSHA requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Several years of generator service experience or equivalent military/technical experience.
- Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting aptitude.
- Ability to diagnose and repair diesel and gaseous engines.
- Basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Positive attitude and strong customer-service mindset.
- Ability and willingness to explain maintenance and repair issues to customers.
- Ability to work effectively with technicians, apprentices, engineers, and customers.
- Ability to safely use standard hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively.
- Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Generator industry experience.
- Experience servicing generators ranging from 2KW to 3MW.
- Experience with automatic transfer switches (ATS).
- Experience with static transfer switches.
- Experience with multiple-unit paralleling systems.
- Technical or trade school training.
- Automotive, diesel, transportation, commercial electrical, or residential electrical experience.
- Military technical training or experience.
- Experience with generator installations and complete system commissioning.
Tools & Equipment
Technicians are expected to have and safely operate basic hand tools, including:
- Digital multimeter
- Standard and metric socket and wrench sets
- Screwdrivers
- Allen wrenches
- Pliers and crimpers
- Other standard mechanical and electrical hand tools
Technicians must understand the proper function, application, and safe operation of their tools and diagnostic equipment.
Work Schedule & Travel
- Work may be performed in the shop or at customer locations depending on job requirements.
- Some irregular hours, weekends, and holidays are required.
- Participation in an after-hours on-call technician rotation is required.
- Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stays is required.
- Position primarily involves off-site field service with minimal supervision.
Physical & Professional Requirements
- Must be in good physical condition and capable of performing hands-on mechanical and electrical work.
- Must demonstrate mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Must be willing to learn new technologies and diagnostic methods.
- Must be able to discuss complex or abstract technical problems with industry peers.
- Must have a willingness to teach and share knowledge with other technicians.
- Must be safety-conscious and follow OSHA requirements and company procedures.
- Must demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to work independently in customer environments.
