This position is for an experienced Multi-Axis CNC Machinist in a fast-paced job shop environment in Decatur, AL. You will independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot multi-axis CNC machines to produce high-quality precision parts. The role requires strong hands-on machining skills, the ability to read and interpret technical documentation, and a commitment to meeting production schedules while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. Aerospace machining experience is a strong plus.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate multi-axis CNC machines, including 3-, 4-, and/or 5-axis equipment.
  • Perform complete machine setups, including fixture setup, workholding, and alignment.
  • Carry out tool changes, tool offsets, and work offsets as required for each job.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions, including GD&T callouts.
  • Use G-code at the machine to make minor program edits and adjustments to optimize machining performance.
  • Apply knowledge of G and M codes to ensure accurate and efficient machine operation.
  • Perform first-article inspections to verify part conformance before running production.
  • Conduct in-process quality checks using precision measuring tools to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, programs, setups, feeds, and speeds.
  • Adjust machining parameters such as feed rates and spindle speeds to improve part quality and cycle time.
  • Utilize both climb milling and conventional milling techniques as appropriate for the material and setup.
  • Work with CNC lathes and mills, including multi-axis configurations, to produce precision components.
  • Operate and adjust Mazak lathes and Mazak mills, as applicable to production requirements.
  • Use controls and features such as M3 spindle commands and related functions during machine operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards.
  • Follow established work instructions, shop procedures, and safety guidelines at all times.
  • Meet production schedules and deadlines while consistently maintaining quality standards.
  • Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to resolve production and quality issues.
  • Care for and properly use personal machining tools and measuring instruments brought to the job.
Essential Skills
  • 3–5 years of CNC machining experience in a job shop environment.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating multi-axis CNC machines (3-, 4-, and/or 5-axis).
  • Proficiency with CNC lathes and CNC mills, including multi-axis configurations.
  • Ability to independently perform complete machine setups, including fixture setup and alignment.
  • Strong skills in performing tool changes, tool offsets, and work offsets without supervision.
  • Ability to make basic CNC programming changes or program edits directly at the machine using G-code.
  • Solid understanding of G and M codes used in CNC programming and operation.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including the ability to interpret GD&T symbols and tolerances.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges for inspection.
  • Ability to perform first-article inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure part accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, programs, and setups.
  • Capability to adjust feeds and speeds to optimize machining performance and part quality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to provide and effectively use personal machining tools required for daily work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working in a fast-paced job shop environment with varied part runs and setups.
  • Familiarity with Mazak lathes and Mazak mills and their control systems.
  • Experience with controls or systems commonly used in multi-axis machining centers.
  • Knowledge of climb milling and conventional milling techniques and when to apply each method.
  • Understanding of spindle controls, including commands such as M3 spindle start and related functions.
  • Aerospace machining experience or exposure to aerospace-quality standards is a strong plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality precision parts.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with team members, leads, and other departments as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple jobs and priorities.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify root causes of machining issues and implement solutions.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced job shop environment in Decatur, AL, focused on producing precision components, including aerospace-related parts. You will work on the shop floor operating multi-axis CNC machines such as 3-, 4-, and 5-axis mills and lathes, including Mazak equipment. The work involves frequent machine setups, tool changes, fixture setups, and program edits at the control using G and M codes. You will regularly handle precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges for inspections. The position requires standing for extended periods, working around running machinery, and following established safety procedures. Standard shop attire is expected, including appropriate work clothing and the use of required personal protective equipment suitable for a machining environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Decatur, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $43.00/hr.
