Installation Technician
Job Description
The Installation Technician builds and installs custom conveyor systems and related machinery used for high-volume movement of plastic bottles. This role combines shop-based mechanical assembly and occasional machining or fabrication support with extensive travel to customer sites for on-site installation. The position operates on a first-shift schedule when in the shop and involves approximately 60% travel, including extended hours during installation projects.
Responsibilities- Assemble conveyor systems and machinery components in the shop using hand and power tools such as wrenches and drills.
- Assist in creating and fitting various mechanical pieces that make up custom conveyor belts and machines for the plastic bottling industry.
- Support CNC machining operations when machining experience allows, contributing to precision manufacturing tasks.
- Assist with welding and fabrication activities when fabrication experience is available, helping to produce custom components.
- Work collaboratively in teams within the shop, rotating between areas and supporting different stages of conveyor system builds as needed.
- Travel with an installation lead to customer sites to build, assemble, and install conveyor systems and machines on location.
- Perform mechanical assembly and installation tasks at customer facilities, ensuring equipment is correctly aligned, secured, and ready for operation.
- Work extended hours, typically around 11-hour days, during installation projects, including nights and weekends when required by customer production schedules.
- Interpret and follow blueprints, mechanical drawings, and assembly documentation to ensure accurate builds and installations.
- Use mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot and resolve basic assembly and installation issues on-site and in the shop.
- Handle and operate hand tools and power tools safely and effectively in both shop and field environments.
- Comply with all safety requirements, including wearing steel-toe footwear and using required tools and equipment as specified.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at customer sites and represent the company positively while traveling and working on installations.
- Adapt to varying project lengths and changing work conditions, including different customer facility layouts and production environments.
- 3–4 years of assembly or machine building experience, preferably involving mechanical systems or industrial equipment.
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and the ability to interpret mechanical drawings for assembly and installation work.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with experience in machine building, mechanical assembly, or related mechanical work.
- Hands-on experience with installation or repair of mechanical equipment, including assembling and installing machinery.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools and power tools, such as wrenches and drills, for mechanical assembly tasks.
- Experience with mechanical assembly and, where applicable, basic electrical assembly work.
- Valid driver’s license to support travel to customer sites.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 60% of the time, including up to roughly 100 days per year.
- Ability to work 11-hour days during installation projects, including nights and weekends when required.
- Capability to work safely in both shop and customer facility environments, following all safety procedures.
- Background in machining with the ability to support CNC machining operations is highly beneficial.
- Experience in welding or metal fabrication to assist with fabrication tasks in the shop.
- Prior experience building or installing conveyor systems, packaging equipment, or industrial machinery.
- Familiarity with mechanical and electrical assembly practices in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- Comfort working in a team-based environment and assisting in multiple work areas as project needs change.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to different customer facility layouts and project requirements.
- Reliable personal tool set aligned with the required tool list for the role.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to building quality equipment that meets customer specifications.
This opportunity offers a mix of hands-on shop work and field installation, providing variety in daily tasks and continuous skill development. You will work in a team-oriented environment that values collaboration and adaptability, with the chance to broaden your experience in machining, fabrication, and complex mechanical assembly. Travel assignments come with support and benefits while on the road, helping you stay focused on delivering quality installations. The role suits individuals who enjoy building tangible products, working with their hands, and seeing projects through from fabrication to final installation.
Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a typical job shop environment where custom conveyor systems for the plastic bottling industry are built. The building itself is older, but materials, lighting, and overall conditions are modern and up to date. You will rotate through several work areas, contributing to different stages of custom conveyor builds. In addition to the shop, you will frequently work at various customer facilities to assemble and install finished equipment on-site. These installations often involve extended hours, typically around 11-hour days, and may include night and weekend work to align with customer production shutdowns. Travel is approximately 60% of the role, equating to roughly 100 days per year, and includes working closely with an installation lead. Steel-toe footwear is required, and you must bring and use the specified personal tools in accordance with the tool list. The environment emphasizes safe use of hand and power tools and adherence to site-specific safety practices at both the shop and customer locations.
