The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in supporting patient care by obtaining and preparing high-quality specimens for laboratory testing in a fast-paced outpatient healthcare setting. This position works closely with providers, laboratory personnel, and clinical teams to ensure safe, accurate, and timely specimen collection while maintaining strict compliance with regulatory, safety, and quality standards. The ideal candidate is patient-focused, detail-oriented, and able to provide compassionate service to individuals receiving care for complex rheumatologic and immune-mediated conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Verify patient identity and confirm test requisitions prior to specimen collection to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures in a professional, efficient, and compassionate manner.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by following proper collection, labeling, and handling techniques for all samples.
  • Document specimen collection information accurately and completely within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Organize specimens and associated laboratory reports for processing, transport, and delivery to the appropriate laboratory destinations.
  • Maintain and update laboratory quality control logs and documentation in accordance with established protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor inventory levels and restock laboratory and phlebotomy supplies to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Assist providers with bone marrow collection procedures, following established clinical and safety protocols.
  • Provide clear post-procedure instructions and education to patients following bone marrow collections.
  • Support waived laboratory testing under the supervision of a technologist, following all applicable guidelines.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally with providers regarding discrepancies, unusual test orders, or concerns related to specimen collection.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory policies, OSHA requirements, legal regulations, and COLA standards at all times.
  • Deliver courteous, patient-centered service and contribute to a positive experience for patients and their families.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to support efficient clinic workflows and high-quality patient care.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 1 year of phlebotomy experience performing venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Completion of phlebotomy training with demonstrated competency in blood draw techniques.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and specimen collection procedures, including proper order of draw and site selection.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling and integrity procedures, including labeling, storage, and transport requirements.
  • Understanding of safety and legal requirements related to blood collection, including infection control and OSHA standards.
  • Ability to properly identify and verify patients using approved identifiers.
  • Experience documenting specimen collections within electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and patient communication skills with a compassionate, patient-centered approach.
  • Customer service skills that support positive patient interactions and a respectful clinic environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and handling of specimens.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, patients, and priorities efficiently.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical and laboratory staff.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in phlebotomy and related clinical practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 2+ years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • ASCP Certification preferred.
  • Experience supporting bone marrow procedures or working in oncology, rheumatology, or other specialty clinic settings.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory or oncology environment.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems beyond basic documentation preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities are beneficial for serving a diverse patient population.
  • Familiarity with waived laboratory testing and working under technologist supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide empathetic care to patients with chronic and complex conditions.
  • Interest in contributing to a growing specialty practice focused on high-quality, patient-centered care.
Work Environment

This position is based in an outpatient specialty clinic in Salem, Oregon, serving patients with rheumatologic and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The clinic operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break, offering a consistent daytime schedule. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with close collaboration among physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and support personnel. The practice focuses on delivering efficient, high-quality care in an outpatient setting, providing services for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, spondyloarthropathies, and other complex autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Salem, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.67 - $27.69/hr.
