This role operates fabrication machinery to manufacture steel products in a small, clean job shop environment. The Fabrication Machine Operator reads production documentation, measures and prepares materials, and uses a variety of tools and equipment to produce accurate, high-quality metal components while maintaining a safe and organized work area.

Responsibilities
  • Operate fabrication machinery such as saws, drill presses, and benders to manufacture steel products according to specifications.
  • Read and interpret production documents, blueprints, and work orders to determine job requirements and sequence of operations.
  • Use a tape measure to verify proper length, width, and dimensions of materials and finished products.
  • Perform drilling, tapping, marking, cutting, grinding, and punching holes in metal components with precision and consistency.
  • Set up, adjust, and monitor machines during operation to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Use power tools and hand tools safely and effectively for fabrication and mechanical assembly tasks.
  • Apply basic computer skills to access job instructions, record production data, and support workflow.
  • Inspect finished parts for accuracy and quality, making adjustments as needed to meet standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area, including machines, tools, and surrounding workspace.
  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines while operating machinery and handling materials.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience operating fabrication machinery such as saws, drill presses, and benders.
  • Ability to read and interpret production documents and blueprints.
  • Proficiency using a tape measure accurately for layout and inspection.
  • Hands-on experience with drilling, tapping, marking, cutting, grinding, and punching holes in metal components.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience in mechanical assembly and fabrication.
  • Skilled in machine operation, including setup and safe use of drill presses and saws.
  • Ability to use power tools and hand tools safely and effectively in a fabrication environment.
  • Basic computer skills to support production tasks and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in a fabrication or job shop environment.
  • Background in mechanical assembly and metal fabrication processes.
  • Comfort working with a variety of fabrication tools, including drill presses, saws, and other power tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a production setting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new processes and equipment.

Work Environment

The position is based in a small, clean job shop located in the Indianapolis area. You work on a first-shift schedule, operating fabrication equipment such as saws, drill presses, benders, and other power tools. The environment emphasizes organization, cleanliness, and safe machine operation. Work involves standing for extended periods, handling metal materials, and working around active machinery in a production setting, with appropriate work attire and protective gear suited to a fabrication shop.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
