Job Title: Structural Steel Layout Fitter / FabricatorJob Description

This full-time Structural Steel Layout Fitter / Fabricator role plays a critical part in the construction of structural metal products. You will lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated parts according to blueprints and layout specifications, ensuring all work meets established codes, standards, and customer expectations. You will operate overhead cranes, use cutting and heating torches safely, and perform complex heat corrections and structural adjustments while maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work area.

Responsibilities
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit together structural steel components and fabricated parts according to blueprints and layout specifications.
  • Interpret complex blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols to ensure accurate fabrication and assembly.
  • Perform structural steel welding, including flux core welding, in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Operate overhead cranes safely to move, position, and secure structural steel and other heavy components.
  • Use cutting and heating torches properly and safely to perform complex heat corrections on beams and steel shapes.
  • Check camber and sweep tolerances of beams and structural steel shapes and make necessary corrections to meet required specifications.
  • Set up complex jigs and assemblies to support accurate layout, fitting, and welding of structural steel components.
  • Identify and correct potential hazards in the work area, following all safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain quality procedures and practices to ensure finished products meet recognized standards, codes, and customer requirements.
  • Perform daily cleaning and routine maintenance of the work area, tools, and assigned welding station.
  • Support the structural department by working collaboratively with team members and adapting to varying production needs.
  • Participate in training on overhead crane operation, safety practices, and other job-related procedures as required.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in structural steel layout and fitting, including reading and following detailed layout specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience with structural steel welding, specifically flux core welding on structural steel.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols accurately.
  • Skill in operating overhead cranes safely in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience working with structural steel, including beams and steel shapes, and verifying camber and sweep tolerances.
  • Ability to use cutting and heating torches properly and safely for structural adjustments and heat corrections.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality procedures and practices.
  • Capability to set up and work with complex jigs and assemblies.
  • Ability to identify and address potential safety hazards in an industrial setting.
  • Physical ability to work in a steel fabrication shop, including standing for long periods and handling heavy materials.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Comfort working in a loud, heavy industrial steel fabrication environment.
  • Willingness to work 2nd shift and occasional additional hours, including some Saturdays during busy periods.
  • Openness to initial training on 1st shift prior to transitioning to regular shift.
  • Ownership of basic personal tools required for structural fitting and welding tasks.
  • Ability to follow detailed safety protocols and use personal protective equipment consistently.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to support the structural department as needed.

Work Environment

This role is on 2nd shift, Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with work commonly extending to around midnight and some additional hours on Saturdays when workloads are high. Initial training lasts approximately 1–2 weeks on 1st shift, Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with possible extension to 3:30 p.m. and additional hours on Saturdays from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The position is based in a steel fabrication shop that is loud and heavily industrial, with safety as a top priority. Equipment ranges from new to older machinery, and overhead cranes operate throughout the facility. You will have your own dedicated welding station and will support the structural department on a daily basis. Appropriate attire includes steel toe boots and safety glasses, and you are expected to bring and use your own tools in accordance with facility requirements.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of York, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
