The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and storing samples, and assisting with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. This position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and the ability to provide clear, courteous service to patients in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including lab draws, drug screens, paternity testing, and collection of urine and fecal samples as required.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles while maintaining patient safety and specimen integrity.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is correct and complete.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to specific test orders and established protocols.
  • Collect and store specimens in accordance with established procedures, including maintaining required temperatures and using appropriate containers and tubes.
  • Package specimens for transport, following protocols designed to maintain specimen integrity and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Process samples, including decontamination and recording maintenance data, in alignment with laboratory standards.
  • Update patient information and related records accurately in the system.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control policies.
  • Attend annual departmental trainings and remain current on procedures, regulations, and best practices.
  • Make workflow recommendations and assist with troubleshooting and training to support continuous improvement in laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
  • Proven proficiency in performing blood draws and handling specimens accurately.
  • Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and basic data entry.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and standard safety practices.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
  • Strong customer service skills when working with patients and clinical staff.

  • Demonstrated ability as a "good stick," consistently achieving successful venipunctures.
  • Comfort and experience working with pediatric patients.
  • Ability to contribute to training and workflow improvement initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Professional, courteous demeanor when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
Work Environment

This role operates in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting with a Monday through Friday schedule, typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mornings are busy with a high volume of specimen collections, while afternoons tend to be slower, allowing time for processing, documentation, and follow-up tasks. The environment requires consistent adherence to safety and infection control protocols, including compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. Phlebotomists interact regularly with adult and pediatric patients and must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor suitable for a healthcare setting, providing courteous, patient-focused service throughout the day.

This is a Contract position based out of Wichita, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.
