The Phlebotomist I plays a key role in performing high-quality venipunctures and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced environment. This position focuses on accurate blood draws, specimen handling, and data entry, while delivering excellent customer service to patients and collaborating closely with clinical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection on patients of all ages using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens as required.
  • Collect, label, and store specimens according to established protocols to ensure accuracy and specimen integrity.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and transport protocols.
  • Package specimens for transport and store samples at appropriate temperatures and in proper collection containers or tubes.
  • Update and maintain patient information and input laboratory orders accurately into the appropriate systems.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings and remain current on laboratory policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, clinicians, and staff, ensuring a positive and respectful experience.
  • Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen processing.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques and support training activities as needed.
Essential Skills
  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of recent work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and specimen collection on patients of all ages.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to deliver a courteous and professional patient experience.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to input and process laboratory orders accurately and update patient information.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, and matching requisitions to specimen tubes.
  • Dependability with excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory or clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with packaging specimens for transport and maintaining specimen integrity through proper storage conditions.
  • Understanding of physicians’ orders and laboratory test requirements.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to maintaining safety and compliance.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Ability to participate in and benefit from annual department trainings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a clinical or laboratory environment.
  • Trusted track record in phlebotomy or clinical support roles.
Work Environment

This is an onsite role in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting that involves direct patient interaction and close collaboration with healthcare staff. The work environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and organization, with strict adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and established specimen handling protocols. You will work at a workstation equipped for venipuncture and specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, and preparing samples for transport. The setting requires consistent, dependable attendance and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining high accuracy and excellent customer service.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Broken Arrow, OK.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
